Chapter 14 - THE LAST RECORDING

Three days later, the Whitmore mansion finally became quiet.
No police.
No reporters.
No investigators walking through every room.
Just silence.
Daniel sat in his father’s old office.
Michael placed a small box on the desk.
“This was hidden in your father’s safe.”
Daniel looked at it.
“What is it?”
“The original recording.”
His hands tightened.
“Why didn’t Robert find it?”
“Because your father was smarter than everyone thought.”
Daniel opened the box.
Inside was a small old recorder.
He pressed play.
Static.
Then his father’s voice.
“Daniel…”
A tear formed in his eyes.
It was the first time he had heard his father’s voice in years.
“If you are hearing this, I am probably gone.”
Daniel looked down.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know something.”
A pause.
“Your mother was never weak.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“She knew the truth.”
Another pause.
“And Victoria…”
Daniel stopped breathing.
His father continued.
“She is not the enemy.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Even his father had known.
“I met Victoria before you did.”
The confession shocked him.
“I knew who her father was.”
Richard explained everything.
He had discovered Robert’s plan.
He had tried to protect Thomas Hale.
But Robert had manipulated events.
Then Richard said:
“I believe Victoria will come into your life.”
Daniel frowned.
How could his father have known?
The recording continued.
“If she does, remember this.”
A pause.
“People can make terrible choices when they are hurt.”
Daniel listened carefully.
“But that does not mean they cannot change.”
The recording ended.
The room was silent.
Daniel sat there for a long time.
Thinking about Victoria.
Thinking about everything she had done.
Everything she had suffered.
Everything she had destroyed.
Later that evening, Daniel found her outside the house.
She was preparing to leave.
“Where are you going?”
Victoria looked at him.
“Away.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t belong here.”
Daniel stood quietly.
Then said:
“You were wrong.”
She looked confused.
“About what?”
“You thought you were only the person who hurt my family.”
A pause.
“But you were also someone who was hurt.”
Victoria looked away.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Because forgiveness isn’t the same as forgetting.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel believed her.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
Some damage could not disappear.
May you like
But because for the first time…
She wasn’t pretending.
