Chapter 2 - THE PERFECT WIFE’S PERFECT LIE
Two hours earlier, Victoria Whitmore had been preparing for her final performance.
She stood in front of her bedroom mirror wearing a designer dress and diamond earrings.
Everything about her looked flawless.
The same woman everyone admired.
The same woman neighbors called “an angel.”
Her phone rang.
She answered without looking.
“Is it done?”
A man’s voice replied.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Victoria smiled.
“Once Clara gets arrested, nobody will question moving Evelyn into assisted care.”
The man hesitated.
“And Daniel?”
Victoria looked at herself in the mirror.
“He loves me.”
A pause.
“He always has.”
The man laughed.
“You’re sure?”
Victoria touched her wedding ring.
“He sees what I want him to see.”
She ended the call.
Then she practiced her expression.
A worried wife.
A devastated daughter-in-law.
A victim.
She had spent years building that image.
And she was about to destroy anyone who threatened it.
Including the old woman who trusted her.
Daniel sat in the security room watching the recordings.
Hours of footage.
Months of evidence.
Victoria didn’t know.
But every conversation had been captured.
Every suspicious movement.
Every lie.
He watched his wife enter Evelyn’s bedroom late at night.
He watched her remove the emergency button.
He watched her whisper something.
Daniel increased the volume.
Victoria’s voice filled the room.
“You should have signed the papers when I asked.”
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“I will never give you control.”
Victoria smiled.
“Then you’ll lose everything.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hearing it hurt more than he expected.
Because part of him still remembered the woman she used to be.
The woman who held his hand during his father’s funeral.
The woman who promised she would protect his family.
But that woman was gone.
Or maybe she had never existed.
The door opened.
His lawyer, Michael Hayes, entered.
“It’s worse than we thought.”
Daniel looked up.
“What else?”
Michael placed a folder on the table.
“Victoria wasn’t only stealing money.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside were property documents.
Insurance records.
Medical forms.
His face hardened.
“She was preparing for my mother’s death.”
Michael nodded.
“She changed beneficiary information.”
Daniel stared at the papers.
“She planned everything.”
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel stood.
“Call the police.”
Michael looked surprised.
“Are you ready?”
Daniel looked toward the security monitors.
