Chapter 8 - The Unraveling

Julian kicked the rifle away as two police officers burst through the doors, tackling Robert to the floor and securing him in handcuffs.
Robert was bleeding from a gash on his forehead, sobbing openly into the marble tile. "She paid me, Julian! Five hundred thousand! Check the Cayman account... it’s all under her name!"
Margaret backed away slowly, clutching her silk robe, her face pale and sunken. For the first time in her life, the matriarch looked powerless.
Prosecutor Ross entered the foyer, holstering his weapon, motioning to the officers. "Margaret Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence, and accessory to vehicular homicide."
"Don't touch me!" Margaret hissed, recoiling as an officer approached with handcuffs. "Do you know who I am? Do you know who pays the mayor’s campaign bills?"
"I don't care if you pay the President, Margaret," Ross said coldly. "Turn around."
The metal cuffs clicked shut around Margaret's thin wrists.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the foyer, surrounded by the ruins of his family. His mother—the woman whose approval he had spent his entire life chasing—was a murderer. His uncle was her hitman. And his brother had died trying to protect an unborn child.
Evelyn stood near the entryway, watching quietly. There was no triumph on her face. Only exhaustion.
As the officers led Margaret toward the door, she stopped directly in front of Evelyn.
"You think you won?" Margaret whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "You destroyed this family. Julian will never look at you again without remembering this night. You destroyed his life too."
"No, Margaret," Evelyn replied quietly, looking her dead in the eye. "I freed him. You're the one who destroyed everything."
Margaret was pushed out into the night, the sirens wailing as the squad cars pulled away down the winding driveway.
Silence returned to the mansion.
Julian turned slowly to face Evelyn. The distance between them across the grand foyer felt like a thousand miles.
"Did you ever love me?" Julian asked, his voice cracking. "Or was all of it... was every single day just an assignment for you?"
May you like
Evelyn swallowed hard, her eyes brimming with tears. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver key. "Meet me at the lake house tomorrow morning, Julian. If you really want to know the whole truth."
She set the key on the table and walked out into the dark.
