Chapter 15 - A New Beginning

State police divers pulled Margaret Vance from the freezing waters of Lake Arrowhead ten minutes later.
She was alive, shivering violently under heavy foil shock blankets, as handcuffs were once again locked around her wrists. This time, there was no bail. The federal warrants for conspiracy, attempted murder, and securities fraud ensured she would spend the rest of her natural life inside a maximum-security federal penitentiary.
Three months later.
The Vance mansion had been sold at public auction, with the proceeds transferred entirely into a charitable foundation established in memory of Thomas Vance, Clara Morales, and their unborn child.
Julian stood on the edge of the limestone terrace where the nightmare had begun. The pool had been drained, leaving only clean white tile baking under the warm California sun.
A soft step sounded on the limestone behind him.
Julian didn't turn around with fear this time. He smiled faintly. "You didn't leave a forwarding address."
Evelyn walked up beside him, wearing a simple linen dress, her hair blowing gently in the afternoon breeze. "I needed time to figure out who I was without the revenge."
"Did you find out?" Julian asked, turning to look at her.
"A little bit," she said, looking down into the empty pool. "Thomas took over the logistics firm. He’s doing well. He’s building community housing in Clara’s hometown."
"I know," Julian said. "I resigned from the board yesterday. I’m starting an independent architectural practice in Seattle. Small projects. Honest work."
Evelyn looked at him, her hazel eyes warm and open, stripped of all the secrets that had weighed them down for four years. "Seattle is nice. Lots of rain."
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out the diamond wedding ring she had left on the console table three months ago. He held it out on his open palm.
"I don't expect you to put this back on," Julian said softly. "I know our beginning was built on lies, trauma, and a family that tried to destroy you."
Evelyn looked at the ring, then looked up into Julian’s eyes—the man who had finally broken his chains.
"Maybe we don't start with the ring," Evelyn said, a gentle, genuine smile touching her lips as she reached out and took his empty hand instead. "Maybe we just start with coffee."
Julian smiled back, closing his fingers around hers, feeling the warmth of a real future for the very first time.

"I'd like that," Julian said.
They turned their backs on the empty mansion and walked down the pathway together, leaving the ghosts of the past behind them.
