Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

"Mom, put the gun down," Julian said, stepping directly between Margaret’s pistol and Evelyn.

Margaret’s eyes twitched with annoyance. "Move out of the way, Julian. She is the root of this entire disaster. If she hadn't dug up Clara’s ghost, you and I would be running Vance Logistics peacefully."

"Peacefully?" Julian laughed, a wild, furious sound. "You murdered Thomas! You tried to murder Clara and her baby! You turned me into a coward who couldn't even see his own wife was drowning in grief!"

"Clara Morales was a parasite!" Margaret screamed, her polished facade finally cracking into pure, unfiltered madness. "Our bloodline is worth hundreds of millions of dollars! I built this empire with your father! I was not going to let some waitress from the valley take half of it!"

"It was never about the money, Margaret," Thomas spoke from the shadows of the boat, stepping forward into the light. "It was about control. You couldn't control me, so you tried to erase me. You couldn't control Evelyn, so you tried to ruin her."

Margaret looked at her eldest son, her eyes devoid of any maternal warmth. "You were weak, Thomas. Just like your father. But Julian... Julian was obedient. Until this little slut poisoned him."

Margaret raised the pistol, aiming square at Julian’s forehead. "Sign the power of attorney on your phone, Julian. Transfer the trust assets back to my private entity. Or I will shoot her, then Thomas, and tell the police you all killed each other in a family feud."

Julian looked into his mother’s eyes. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel fear. He didn't feel guilt. He felt absolutely nothing.

"No," Julian said.

Margaret’s finger tightened on the trigger. "I will do it, Julian."

"Do it then," Julian challenged, taking a step toward the barrel. "Because the moment you kill me, the emergency override on my phone executes automatically. Ross already has the cloud server passwords. The Cayman wire receipts are streaming live to the Department of Justice right now."

Margaret’s jaw dropped. "You're bluffing."

"Check your watch, Mom," Evelyn said from behind Julian, holding up her smartphone. "The stream went live two minutes ago."

Sirens, distant but rapidly approaching, echoed across the lake.
