Chapter 1 - The Splash

"If you take one more step, Evelyn, I swear to God you’ll never see a dime of my son’s money."
The harsh voice belonged to Margaret Vance. She stood on the edge of the limestone terrace, her designer linen trousers glowing under the sun, arms crossed over her chest. The backyard of the Vance estate in the hills was dead silent, save for the hum of the pool filter.
Evelyn didn’t blink. She was twenty-eight, dressed in a plain white blouse that felt suffocatingly cheap in this zip code. She held her ground just three feet away, staring at the woman who had spent four years systematically dismantling her dignity.
"I never wanted your money, Margaret," Evelyn whispered, her voice dangerously flat. "I wanted your son to survive you."
"You’re a parasite," Margaret sneered, turning her back dismissively toward the turquoise water. "A nobody from a nowhere town. Julian is filing the divorce papers tomorrow. I personally called the firm. By Friday, you will be scrubbed from this house like a stain."
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed. The rage that had been brewing for months—the quiet humiliations, the withheld letters, the quiet poisoning of Julian’s mind—snapped like a dried twig.
She took two strides. She didn’t hesitate. She placed both palms squarely against the center of Margaret’s shoulder blades.
Shove.
A piercing, ragged shriek sliced through the humid afternoon air as Margaret lost her footing. Her arms windmilled wildly, clutching at empty air, before she hit the water with a violent, concussive smash.
Water exploded across the limestone.
Margaret went down immediately. Her heavy linen clothes and silk scarf acted like anchors, dragging her down toward the eight-foot deep end. She breached once, coughing frantically, chlorine burning her throat. "Help! Julian! Help me!"
Inside the living room, a heavy glass door shattered open.
Julian Vance bolted out onto the lawn. He didn't even look at the terrace. He heard his mother’s choking gasps and hit the grass at a dead sprint. Without kicking off his loafers, Julian launched himself into the deep end.
The water churned into white foam. Julian grabbed his mother beneath her armpits, fighting the dead weight of her sodden clothes, kicking toward the shallow ledge. He hauled Margaret’s gasping, shivering body onto the warm stone steps.
Margaret coughed up water, clutching Julian’s soaked shirt, her manicured nails digging into his skin. "She... she tried to kill me!"
Julian turned his head slowly. Water dripped from his hair into his eyes, but his vision locked onto Evelyn.
Evelyn was standing right at the edge. Her hands were still slightly raised. Her chest heaved, but her face was chillingly blank. She didn't look remorseful. She didn't look scared.
"What did you do to my mother?" Julian rasped, his voice trembling between horror and disbelief.
May you like
Evelyn lowered her hands slowly, meeting his stare. "I gave her exactly what she gave my sister."
Julian froze, the blood draining completely from his face.
