Chapter 2 - Broken Trust

"What did you just say?" Julian stood up, stepping between his shivering mother and his wife. Water pooled at his feet. "What the hell are you talking about, Evelyn?"

"Julian, she’s insane!" Margaret choked out, clinging to the edge of a sun lounger. "Call the police! She pushed me! She tried to drown me in our own pool!"

Evelyn looked at Julian—the man she had shared a bed with for four years, the man who had promised to protect her from his family’s toxic legacy. But looking at him now, soaked, terrified, and automatically shielding his mother, she saw the harsh truth. He was still the boy who couldn't cut the cord.

"Ask her, Julian," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with controlled fury. "Ask your mother why Clara had twenty thousand dollars in a bank account registered under a shell company called Vance Ridge Holdings."

Julian blinked, caught off guard. "Clara? My brother’s ex-fiancée? Clara died in an accident three years ago. Why are you bringing her up right now?"

"It wasn't an accident," Evelyn spat.

Margaret’s coughing stopped abruptly. The older woman sat completely still on the stone deck, her wet hair plastered against her cheeks, her pale eyes wide. "Don't listen to this street trash, Julian. She’s trying to deflect because she just committed assault. Call nine-one-one!"

Julian reached into his pocket out of instinct, but his phone was soaked and dead. He turned to Evelyn, his chest tight. "Evelyn, you need to step inside. Right now. We are going to sit down, and you are going to explain what just happened, or I swear to God I will call security myself."

"You want me to step inside?" Evelyn let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "I lived in this cage for four years pretending I was just the sweet, compliant girl you met at the clinic. I bit my tongue while your mother checked my phone, tracked my car, and reminded me every single dinner that I wasn't worthy of your name."

"I protected you!" Julian shouted, taking a step toward her.

"You managed me, Julian! There's a difference!" Evelyn backed up toward the sliding glass door. "You managed me so your mother wouldn't cut your trust fund."

"That is a lie!" Julian yelled.

"Check the floor safe in her private office, Julian," Evelyn said coldly, pointing a trembling finger at the dripping older woman on the deck. "Check the red ledger behind the false panel. Clara kept a backup copy. And I found it this morning."

Margaret lunged forward from the deck, forgetting her weakness. "Julian, grab her! Don't let her leave the house!"

Julian hesitated for one second. And in that one second, Evelyn slipped inside the house, locking the patio door with a sharp, echoing click.
