Chapter 4 - Blood Money

Julian dropped the paper onto the desk. The water from his fingers made the ink bleed. "What is this, Mom?"
Margaret walked into the room, perfectly poised despite her damp hair. She closed the heavy wooden door behind her with an ominous click. "It’s none of your business, Julian. That is private family business from before you took over the company."
"Thomas was my brother!" Julian shouted, his voice breaking. "Why were you paying an off-the-books investigator fifty thousand dollars right before Thomas was killed?"
"Because Thomas was an idiot," Margaret said, her tone razor-sharp. "He was about to ruin this family. He was going to sell his entire stake in Vance Logistics to our competitors just so he could run off to Europe with Clara."
"So you tracked him?"
"I protected our legacy!" Margaret stepped closer, pointing an accusatory finger at Julian's chest. "Just like I’ve been trying to protect you from that viper you married! Did you really think Evelyn bumped into you at that grief group by accident? She’s Clara’s half-sister, you blind fool!"
The room seemed to tilt beneath Julian’s feet. "What?"
"Her mother remarried," Margaret hissed. "Evelyn took her stepfather’s name. Clara was her sister. She entered your life with one goal: to destroy this family from the inside out."
Julian leaned against the desk, fighting nausea. Every memory of the last four years flashed before his eyes—the way Evelyn held him when he cried about Thomas, the way she encouraged him to take over the family firm, the gentle way she asked questions about the family’s old financial records.
"She played you," Margaret whispered, her voice softening into a venomous maternal comfort. "She’s been hunting for leverage. She pushed me into that pool to kill me before I could tell you the truth. She’s upstairs in the guest house right now, packing the original files."
Julian’s jaw tightened. The grief and shock hardened into pure, blinding fury. "I’ll handle her."
"No," Margaret said, grabbing his arm with surprising strength. "Don't talk to her. Let security handle it. She has stolen corporate property. She goes to prison tonight."
Julian pulled his arm away. "I need to look her in the eye."
He turned and pushed past his mother, storming down the hallway toward the detached guest wing. But when he reached the glass walkway, he saw red taillights cutting through the heavy iron gates at the bottom of the driveway.

Evelyn was gone.
And on the marble console table in the foyer, she had left her diamond wedding ring resting on top of an audio cassette tape.
