Chapter 11 - The Matriarch's Revenge

Tires crunched violently against the gravel outside.
Through the front window, Julian saw two black SUVs pull up alongside his car. Four heavily armed men in private tactical gear stepped out, fanning across the perimeter. Behind them stepped Margaret Vance, dressed in a sharp black trench coat, looking entirely unfazed by her brief stint in handcuffs.
"She used her private security detail," Julian whispered, backing away from the window. "She’s completely lost her mind."
"She didn't lose her mind," Thomas said coldly, picking his revolver back up from the table and checking the cylinder. "She’s protecting forty million dollars in unindexed trust funds. If I walk into the courthouse alive tomorrow, the entire Vance estate defaults to me, and she gets stripped of every single asset."
"She won't shoot her own sons," Julian said desperately.
Thomas gave a dry, humorless laugh. "She already tried to kill me once, Julian. You think she cares about a two-for-one discount?"
A megaphone crackled from the driveway.
"Julian! Thomas!" Margaret’s voice echoed through the pine trees, calm, polite, and horrifyingly corporate. "I know you’re both inside. Evelyn, dear, you too. Let’s not make this messy. Come out to the porch and let’s discuss the restructuring of the family trust."
"Restructuring," Evelyn muttered with disgust. "She treats murder like a board meeting."
"There’s a cellar tunnel behind the pantry," Thomas whispered, motioning toward the back of the cabin. "It leads out to the boat dock on the lake. Evelyn, take Julian and go. Now."
"I'm not leaving you," Julian said, stepping forward. "I spent four years running from her shadow. I'm done."
"Julian, you don't have a weapon!" Evelyn pleaded, grabbing his arm.
May you like
"I don't need a weapon," Julian said, his eyes hardening with a resolve he had never felt before. "I have the signing authority. Margaret can't liquidate a single offshore account without my biometric authorization. She needs me alive."
Suddenly, the front windows exploded into shards of glass as suppressed gunfire shredded the wooden cabin walls.
