Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

The hearing was one week away.
Emily stopped pretending.
She became angry.
She accused me of destroying the family.
She told people I was unstable.
She told everyone I came home and immediately attacked her.
But there was one thing she forgot.
Truth leaves evidence.
And lies leave patterns.
My attorney collected everything.
The pictures.
The messages.
The school reports.
The witness statements.
Then came the biggest piece.
The security camera.
I had forgotten we still had one pointed toward the backyard.
The camera recorded the night I came home.
The night Lily was outside.
The video showed everything.
Brad opening the back door.
Lily standing there crying.
Brad pointing outside.
Lily refusing.
Brad grabbing her arm.
And Emily standing behind him.
Watching.
My hands shook while I watched.
Not because I was surprised.
Because I was hoping I was wrong.
I wanted to believe there was some explanation.
Some misunderstanding.
There wasn't.
My wife watched our daughter get sent outside.
And did nothing.
When the video ended, nobody spoke.
My attorney looked at me.
"Daniel."
"Are you okay?"
I looked at the screen.
At my daughter's frightened face.
"No."
"I'm not."
"But now I know what I have to do."
The next morning, I walked into court.
Emily was sitting across from me.
Brad was beside her.
They looked confident.
They thought they could explain everything away.
Then the judge entered.
And the first words spoken changed the entire direction of the case.
"Before we begin..."
"The court has received new evidence."
Emily looked confused.
Brad looked nervous.
The judge continued.
"A video recording from the family residence."
I looked at Emily.
May you like
And for the first time...
She looked afraid.
