Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH ABOUT BRAD

My attorney hired an investigator.

Within days, we discovered the truth.

Brad was not who he claimed to be.

He was not just Emily's friend.

He had a history of manipulation.

Broken relationships.

Financial problems.

And one repeated pattern.

He always found people who were vulnerable.

Then he made himself necessary.

Emily had not fallen in love with Brad overnight.

She had depended on him.

And he knew exactly how to use that.

The investigator found messages between Brad and Emily from months earlier.

Messages where Brad talked about "starting over."

Messages where he talked about "a future without Daniel."

But the worst messages were the ones about Lily.

Brad wrote:

"She will adjust."

"Kids forget quickly."

When I read those words, I had to put the phone down.

Because no child should ever be treated like an obstacle.

I met Emily one final time.

She arrived looking exhausted.

Different from the woman at the party.

"I know about the messages."

Her face changed.

"You went through my phone?"

"No."

"The truth found me."

She looked down.

"I made mistakes."

I nodded.

"Yes."

"But Brad manipulated me."

I looked at her.

"That explains your choices."

"It doesn't excuse them."

She started crying.

"I thought you would never come back."

The words surprised me.

"What?"

"I thought the deployment would change everything."

"It did."

She looked at me.

"I was angry."

"I was lonely."

"I hated feeling abandoned."

I stayed quiet.

Then she whispered:

"But I never stopped loving Lily."

I looked away.

Because that was the hardest part.

I believed she loved our daughter.

But love without protection was not enough.

Love without action was not enough.

That evening, something happened.

Something that changed everything.

Buster started barking at the backyard fence.

I grabbed a flashlight.

I walked outside.

Near the fence was a small envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was one sentence.

"Ask your wife what happened the night before you left."

I stared at the words.
