Chapter 12 - THE FINAL MOVE

Brad knew the investigation was closing in.
So he did what people like him always did.
He attacked first.
A false report was filed.
A complaint claiming I was unstable.
Claiming I was using Lily against her mother.
Claiming I had become dangerous after returning from deployment.
For a moment, I felt exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
I had spent months fighting for my country.
Now I was fighting to protect my own child.
But something was different.
Before, I was fighting alone.
Now I had evidence.
I had witnesses.
And most importantly...
I had Lily.
The court hearing became the most important moment of my life.
Brad arrived confident.
He wore an expensive suit.
He acted calm.
Like he still believed he could control the story.
But then my attorney presented the evidence.
The messages.
The video.
The school records.
The witness statements.
And finally...
The statement from Lily's teacher.
"She was afraid to speak."
"She believed she would get in trouble if she told anyone."
The judge looked serious.
Then Brad made his mistake.
He lost control.
"This is ridiculous."
"Everyone is acting like she is some victim."
The courtroom became silent.
I looked at him.
The man who thought a child was a problem.
The man who thought fear was a parenting method.
The judge leaned forward.
"Mr. Collins."
"Do you understand what you just said?"
Brad realized too late.
His anger had revealed him.
The hearing ended differently than he expected.
The court ordered that Brad have no contact with Lily.
And Emily's custody rights were temporarily restricted.
Outside the courtroom, Emily cried.
"I lost everything."
I looked at her.
"No."
"You lost the life you were pretending to have."
She looked at me.
"And what about us?"
I was quiet.
Because that answer was complicated.
