Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO WANTED MY FAMILY

The more I discovered, the worse it became.

Brad had not entered our lives overnight.

He had slowly replaced me.

A small favor here.

A friendly visit there.

A ride home from school.

A dinner when Emily said she was too tired.

At first, it looked harmless.

That was the dangerous part.

The worst betrayals rarely begin with something obvious.

They begin with something people convince themselves is acceptable.

I spent three days pretending everything was normal.

I went to work.

I took care of Lily.

I spoke to Emily.

But inside, I was building a case.

Not against my wife.

Against the people who had hurt my daughter.

One afternoon, I came home earlier than expected.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked through the living room.

Then I heard voices from the kitchen.

Emily and Brad.

I stopped before they saw me.

"You said he would be gone longer."

Brad sounded angry.

Emily whispered.

"I didn't know he was coming back early."

"Then fix it."

My hands tightened.

Fix it.

Like my return was a problem.

Like I was an inconvenience.

Emily sighed.

"He's suspicious."

"Of course he is."

"You should have stopped him from seeing her."

My heart stopped.

Seeing who?

I moved closer.

Then I heard Brad say something that made my blood freeze.

"The kid is the problem."

I stepped into the doorway.

"What did you just say?"

Both of them turned.

Brad's face changed immediately.

Emily looked terrified.

I stared at him.

"Say it again."

He said nothing.

"Go ahead."

"What did you mean by 'the kid is the problem'?"

Brad stood up.

"Daniel, you are misunderstanding."

"No."

"I heard you."

He looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

"You don't know everything."

I laughed quietly.

"You're right."

"I don't."

"But I know enough."

Emily stepped between us.

"Daniel, please."

I looked at her.

"How long?"

She looked confused.

"How long what?"

"How long has he been acting like a father to Lily?"

Her silence was the answer.

I felt something break inside me.

Not my heart.

Something else.

The last piece of trust I had been holding.

That night, I asked Lily a question.

"Sweetheart."

"Did Brad ever tell you he was your daddy?"

She looked scared.

"No."

"Did he ever tell you not to tell me things?"

She looked down.

Slowly, she nodded.

"What did he say?"

Her voice became tiny.

"He said Daddy was gone."

"And Mommy needed someone new."

I closed my eyes.

Because hearing it from my daughter hurt more than hearing it from anyone else.

The next morning, I filed for temporary emergency custody.

Not because I wanted to punish Emily.

Because I needed to make sure Lily was safe.

When Emily found out...

She came apart.

"You are taking my daughter away from me?"

I looked at her.

"No."

"I'm protecting her."

She cried.

"I'm her mother."

I nodded.

"Then you should have protected her."

May you like

The words were painful.

But they were true.
