Chapter 15 - THE FATHER WHO CAME HOME

A year after that night, Lily asked me a question.

We were sitting on the porch.

Buster was sleeping beside us.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Do you remember when I thought you were a ghost?"

I smiled sadly.

"Yes."

She looked at me.

"I was wrong."

I nodded.

"Yes, you were."

She hugged me.

"You're real."

I held her tightly.

"Always."

The truth was...

That night I came home, I thought I lost everything.

My marriage.

My family.

My future.

But I gained something more important.

I learned what mattered.

Not appearances.

Not promises.

Not people who claimed to love you.

Actions showed the truth.

Buster proved that.

A dog stayed with my daughter when people walked away.

My daughter proved that.

A five-year-old child still believed in love after being hurt.

And I proved something to myself.

Coming home was not about walking through the front door.

Coming home was about becoming the person your child needed.

Years later, Lily would not remember every detail of that terrible night.

She would not remember the cold mud.

The fear.

The tears.

But she would remember something else.

She would remember her father came back.

She would remember someone chose her.

She would remember she was never alone.

And every night before she went to sleep, she would say the same thing.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"You're staying, right?"

And every night...

I gave her the same answer.

May you like

"Forever."

THE END.
