Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT BEFORE I LEFT

For months, I thought the worst thing that happened was what I discovered when I came home.

I was wrong.

The envelope forced me to remember the night before my deployment.

The night I hugged my daughter goodbye.

The night Emily promised me everything would be okay.

I remembered Lily crying at the airport.

I remembered her little arms wrapped around my neck.

"Come home soon, Daddy."

I remembered promising her.

"I always come home."

But now I wondered.

What happened after I left?

I met Emily at a quiet coffee shop.

She knew something was wrong the moment she saw my face.

"What happened?"

I placed the envelope on the table.

Her expression changed immediately.

"Where did you get this?"

"Someone left it at my house."

She stared at it.

Then she whispered.

"Brad."

I leaned forward.

"What happened that night?"

Emily looked down.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she finally spoke.

"The night before you left..."

"Brad came over."

My hands tightened.

"Why?"

"He said he wanted to say goodbye."

I looked at her.

"To you?"

She shook her head.

"To me."

The silence between us became heavy.

"Emily."

"What happened?"

She closed her eyes.

"He told me you might not come back."

The words hurt.

But I already knew worse was coming.

"He told me I needed someone who would actually be there."

I stared at her.

"And you believed him?"

She cried quietly.

"I was scared."

"I was angry."

"I didn't know how to handle everything."

I looked away.

Because for the first time, I understood.

Brad did not destroy my family alone.

He found a weakness.

And Emily let him inside.

But then she said something unexpected.

"He was the one who told Lily you died."

I looked back at her.

"What?"

Emily started shaking.

"I never told her that."

"I told her you were away."

"I told her you were coming home."

"Brad changed the story."

My heart broke.

Because all this time, my daughter had been carrying a lie created by someone who wanted my place.

I stood up.

"Why didn't you stop him?"

May you like

Emily had no answer.

And that silence was the final truth.
