Chapter 4 - Shadows and Serpents

The old Ford truck sputtered to life with a low, rough rumble.
Mark kept the headlights completely off.
He navigated the dark, narrow alleys using only the dim streetlights from the adjacent avenues.
Every siren in the distance sounded like a hunt hunting him down.
In the passenger seat, Lily was curled up into a tight ball, shivering despite the heavy coat.
Mark’s mind was racing at dangerous speeds.
He had no money, no safe place to hide, and the entire city was looking for him.
The media campaign had already framed him as an unhinged, violent psychopath.
He pulled into an abandoned gas station under the overpass, keeping the engine idling.
He needed a plan.
He needed proof.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small flash drive David had handed him before they split.
It contained the raw, unedited footage from the phone Mark used in the dining room.
It clearly showed the burns on Lily’s arms.
It showed the aunt’s cold, arrogant smirk.
It showed the grandfather standing over them with total indifference.
But Mark knew the raw footage wasn't enough.
In a court ruled by Arthur’s money, evidence could easily disappear.
Witnesses could be bought.
Judges could be bribed.
He needed someone who couldn't be bought.
Mark stared at the dashboard, remembering a name from his past.
Sarah Vance.
She was an investigative journalist who had almost destroyed Arthur’s real estate empire five years ago.
She had been silenced, fired from her major news network, and forced into obscurity.
If anyone hated the family as much as Mark did, it was her.
Mark picked up a prepaid burner phone he had bought days prior.
He dialed a number he had memorized long ago.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Just as he was about to hang up, a tired, sharp female voice answered.
"Who is this?"
"Sarah," Mark said, keeping his voice steady and low.
"It's Mark Miller."
There was a sudden, heavy silence on the line.
Mark could hear the sound of typing stopping instantly on the other end.
"Mark?" Sarah’s voice dropped an octave, filled with intense caution.
"Are you insane?"
"Every TV station in the state is showing your face right now."
"They're saying you lost your mind and attacked your family."
"They're saying you're holding your daughter hostage."
"You know me, Sarah," Mark said, his voice cracking with emotion.
"Do you really believe I would hurt my own child?"
Sarah didn't answer immediately.
The silence dragged on for three agonizing seconds.
"Where are you?" she asked quietly.
"I can't tell you over an open line," Mark replied.
"They're monitoring every signal in the grid."
"Listen to me, Sarah... I have video proof."
"Not just of the assault."
"I have proof of what they did to Lily in that locked bathroom."
"I have proof of the burns, the bruises, and the way they laughed about it."
A sharp intake of breath came through the speaker.
"Cigarette burns?" Sarah asked, her tone shifting from skeptical to deeply personal.
"How did you know?" Mark asked, frowning.
"Because," Sarah whispered, her voice laced with venom.
"That's how Arthur disciplined his own children thirty years ago."
"It's his signature."
Mark’s hand tightened around the phone.
The hair on the back of his neck stood on end.
"You mean... this isn't the first time?"
"Mark, you married into a family of monsters," Sarah said grimly.
"You only saw the polished, wealthy facade."
"You have no idea what lies beneath that estate."
"Meet me at the old industrial docks in forty minutes."
"Come alone... and make sure nobody follows you."
The call disconnected with a sharp click.
Mark looked down at his phone, his pulse hammering in his ears.
He turned to look at Lily.
She was fast asleep, her tiny hand clutching his sleeve tightly.
"I won't let them win, baby," Mark promised quietly into the darkness.
May you like
"I will burn their entire world to the ground."
He put the truck into gear and drove deeper into the shadows of the city.
