Chapter 17 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The morning sun broke through the heavy rain clouds, casting soft golden light over the quiet county hospital.

Federal agents stood guard outside the private room on the third floor.

Inside, the room was quiet, save for the rhythmic monitor display.

Lily lay fast asleep on the white hospital bed, wrapped in clean blankets.

Her face was peaceful, the dark swelling around her eyes finally beginning to recede.

Mark sat in a chair beside her bed, holding her tiny hand in his bruised palm.

A tall female federal prosecutor stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind her.

"Mr. Miller," she said in a quiet, respectful tone.

"I’m Agent Catherine Ross with the Department of Justice."

Mark looked up, his tired eyes showing weeks of exhaustion and sorrow.

"Are they going to try to take her away from me?" Mark asked, his voice rough.

Agent Ross smiled gently and shook her head.

"Not a chance."

"The footage you broadcasted was thoroughly authenticated by our forensic teams."

"The evidence against Arthur, Stephanie, and their inner circle is overwhelming."

"Charges have already been filed for child abuse, conspiracy, murder, and high-level corruption."

"What about the local police?" Mark asked.

"The precinct captain and three high-ranking officers were arrested at dawn," Ross replied.

"They won't be hurting anyone ever again."

"And Sarah Vance?"

"She is currently giving her official statement downstairs."

"Her story is going to make the front page of every major newspaper in the country."

Mark looked back down at his sleeping daughter, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

For the first time in weeks, the crushing weight on his chest began to lift.

Suddenly, a quiet knock came at the door.

Sarah stepped into the room, holding two warm cups of coffee.

Her eyes were red from crying for her brother, but she held her head high.

"How is she?" Sarah asked softly, placing a cup on the nightstand.

"She’s sleeping," Mark said, looking at Sarah with deep gratitude.

"We couldn't have survived this without you and Marcus."

Sarah sat on the edge of the bed and touched Lily’s soft blonde hair.

"Marcus got his justice, Mark."

"He died protecting a little girl, just like the one he lost."

"He died a hero."
