Chapter 19 - The New Dawn

The gentle morning breeze carried the sweet scent of pine and ocean salt across the quiet coastal cottage.
Three months had passed since the final gavel fell in the federal courtroom.
Mark stood on the wooden front porch, holding a warm mug of coffee in his hands.
Below the porch, Lily was playing in the soft green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy.
Her bright laughter echoed through the air like music, clear and free from any shadow of fear.
Her small arms were still lightly scarred, but the bruises were entirely gone.
Sarah stepped out onto the porch, carrying a fresh stack of local newspapers.
"Look at this, Mark," Sarah said, handing him the front page.
The headline read: LOCAL POLICE REFORM BILL PASSED IN WAKE OF ARTHUR ESTATE SCANDAL.
"The whole system is changing because you refused to stay quiet," Sarah said, smiling warmly.
"It wasn't just me, Sarah," Mark replied, looking out over the blue ocean waves.
"It was Marcus."
"It was you."
"We all gave everything we had to make sure Lily could stand in the sun."
Sarah looked toward the small wooden cross standing on the cliff overlooking the bay.
It was Marcus’s memorial, decorated with fresh mountain flowers.
"He would be proud of her," Sarah whispered, her eyes shining with soft tears.
"He would be proud of both of you."
Lily dropped her toy and ran up the porch steps, wrapping her tiny arms tightly around Mark’s leg.
"Daddy, come play with me and Rusty!" she called out, her hazel eyes sparkling with joy.

Mark knelt down, setting his mug aside, and scooped her up into a huge, warm hug.
"I’m right behind you, baby," Mark laughed softly.
