Chapter 20 - Unbreakable
Later that evening, the sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky in gorgeous shades of purple and gold.
Mark tucked Lily into her soft, warm bed inside the cozy bedroom.
She snuggled beneath her thick star-patterned blanket, holding her favorite teddy bear.
There were no lock doors here.
There were no shadowy corners or angry voices.
Only warmth, safety, and endless love.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her voice getting slow and sleepy.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Mark replied, pulling the blanket up to her chin.
"Are we going to stay here forever?"
Mark smiled, running his fingers gently through her soft hair.
"Yes, Lily."
"This is our home now."
"Nobody can ever take you away, and nobody can ever hurt you again."
"Because you were brave, Daddy?"
Mark shook his head gently, kissing her forehead.
"Because we were brave together."
Lily closed her eyes, letting out a long, peaceful sigh as she drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Mark stood in the doorway for a long moment, watching her calm, rhythmic breathing.
The long, bloody nightmare was finally behind them.
The scars on their bodies would remain as a reminder of what they had endured.
But they were no longer victims running in the dark.
They were survivors.
