Chapter 9 - The Tarmac

Rain lashed against the tarmac at Teterboro Airport like a volley of needles.

A sleek, midnight-black Gulfstream G650 stood on the runway, its twin turbofan engines whining loudly as they preheated for departure.

Julian paced near the boarding stairs, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. His neck was wrapped in a support brace, his left eye swollen and purple where Evelyn had struck him earlier.

“Hurry up!” Julian screamed at the baggage handlers loading three heavy aluminum trunks into the cargo hold. “We wheels-up in five minutes!”

Eleanor stood at the top of the airstairs, clutching an umbrella, her face pale with anxiety. “Julian, Victoria isn't answering her phone! We can’t leave without her!”

“She’s a big girl, mother! She can handle herself!” Julian snapped, turning toward the private terminal doors. “If the feds seize the accounts, we’re broke. Get on the damn plane!”

Suddenly, the security gate fifty yards away collapsed inward with a screech of tearing metal.

Marcus’s black Suburban roared onto the tarmac, water spraying high on either side like twin waves. The SUV slid sideways into a controlled drift, blocking the Gulfstream’s path toward the active runway.

The passenger door kicked open.

Evelyn stepped out into the pouring rain.

She wore a dark coat borrowed from the safehouse, her hair soaked and plastered to her face, her eyes burning right through Julian from across the asphalt.

Julian froze, his mouth dropping open in shock. “How… how are you here?”

Behind the Suburban, three black federal vehicles screeched through the broken gate, their sirens cutting through the roar of the jet engines.

“Julian!” Eleanor shrieked from the stairs. “Get inside! Close the door!”

Julian panicked. He dropped his briefcase, scrambled up the metal steps, and reached for the cabin door lever.

“Julian Vance!” Evelyn’s voice boomed across the tarmac, cutting through the engine whine like thunder. “Look at me!”

Julian paused, his hand shaking on the door handle, and turned around to look down at her.
