Chapter 1 - The Slap

The sound of flesh striking flesh echoed louder than the string quartet playing near the champagne fountain.
Julian’s hand was still raised, his knuckles white, his tailored Italian tuxedo straining across his shoulders. Evelyn’s head snapped sideways from the impact, her cheek blooming into a violent, burning crimson. The chandelier light overhead spun in a blur of gold and crystal.
Behind her, small fingers dug desperately into the silk of her emerald evening gown.
“That’s what happens when you raise a thief!” Julian barked, his voice carrying straight over the hum of New York’s elite philanthropy circle.
“Mommy…” Lily’s voice trembled, raw and paper-thin. Tears carved clean lines through the glitter on her cheeks. “Mommy, I didn’t take it… I promise!”
Evelyn swallowed the metallic taste of blood pooling against her molars. She didn’t touch her face. She didn’t flinch. She pulled the six-year-old behind her legs, shielding the trembling child completely from the man standing over them.
“She’s six years old!” Evelyn’s voice cut through the grand ballroom like broken glass. “How dare you lay a hand on me in front of my daughter!”
Julian sneered, leaning in close enough for Evelyn to smell the expensive scotch on his breath. “Don’t lie for the brat! The diamond brooch disappeared straight from my jacket pocket five minutes after she bumped into me at the buffet table!”
A hand clamped firmly down on Evelyn’s shoulder from behind. It was Eleanor, Julian’s mother, dripping in heirloom pearls and condescension.
“Evelyn, stop making a scene,” Eleanor hissed under her breath, eyes darting toward the onlookers already filming on their phones. “You’re ruining the charity gala. Have some dignity.”
“You expect me to stand here and let your son assault me?” Evelyn turned cold eyes on Eleanor.
“You and your daughter are leaving this ballroom. Now!” Julian snarled, lunging forward to grab Lily’s bare wrist.
Before his fingers could close around the girl, Evelyn moved. Her left hand caught Julian’s wrist, twisting it sharply downward, while her right heel drove hard into the center of his sternum.
“Touch her—or me—one more time,” Evelyn whispered, “and you’ll find out exactly what happens.”
Julian staggered back into a tower of champagne flutes, gasping for air as glass shattered in every direction. “AHH! My chest! Security! Get her off me!”
Eleanor shrieked, clutching her son. “What the hell is wrong with you?! How dare you hit him!”

Across the ballroom, two seven-foot private security guards in charcoal suits surged toward Evelyn, their hands unbuttoning their jackets.
Evelyn didn’t run. She looked up and locked eyes with a tall man in a midnight-blue suit standing on the VIP mezzanine above—a man who had just lowered a radio from his lips.
