Chapter 15 - The Vance Legacy

Spring arrived in upstate New York with blooming apple blossoms and warm, golden sunshine.
On the front lawn of a sprawling, historic country estate overlooking the Hudson River, Lily was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy with joyful, unrestrained laughter.
Evelyn stood on the wide wrap-around porch, holding a mug of warm coffee, watching her daughter thrive. The nightmares had stopped. The fear was gone. In its place was the bright, fearless future Lily had always deserved.
Marcus walked out onto the porch, carrying a set of architectural blueprints.
“The foundation for the new Lily Vance Children’s Foundation is breaking ground in Queens next week,” Marcus said, leaning against the wooden railing beside her. “We’ve already funded free legal aid for over two hundred mothers in crisis.”
Evelyn smiled, resting her head gently against his shoulder. “You’re turning the Vance name into something good, Marcus.”
“We’re doing it together,” Marcus corrected softly, turning to wrap his arm securely around her waist.
Lily came running up the wooden porch steps, out of breath and giggling, the puppy tumbling at her heels.
“Daddy! Mommy! Look what Barnaby found!” Lily shouted proudly, holding up a polished, smooth river stone shaped like a perfect heart.
Marcus knelt down on one knee, taking the stone and turning it over in his hand with deep reverence.
“It’s a treasure, kiddo,” Marcus smiled, ruffling Lily’s hair before pulling both Evelyn and Lily into a tight, warm embrace.

Evelyn looked out over the sunlit valley, the past completely behind them, feeling the steady, protective beat of Marcus’s heart.
They had survived the fire, broken the chains, and reclaimed their lives. They were finally, truly free.
