Chapter 14 - The New Beginning

Three months later.

The grand courtroom of the New York State Supreme Court was packed to capacity. Reporters lined the gallery benches, scribbling furiously on their notepads.

Judge Morrison slammed his wooden gavel down with a resounding crack that silenced the entire chamber.

“On the charges of grand larceny, insurance fraud, criminal conspiracy, and felony domestic assault, this court sentences Julian Vance to twenty-five years at Sing Sing Correctional Facility without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years.”

Julian, dressed in a faded orange jumpsuit, slumped forward onto the defense table, burying his face in his shackled hands.

Across the aisle, Eleanor Vance wept silently as she was sentenced to eight years for corporate fraud and obstruction of justice.

Evelyn sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple, elegant navy blue dress. She felt no malice, no triumph—only an overwhelming sense of profound peace.

Marcus stood beside her. As the bailiffs led Julian away in chains, Julian turned back one last time, catching Evelyn’s eye.

There was no arrogance left in the man. Only the hollow, broken gaze of someone who had gambled his entire soul and lost everything.

Evelyn didn’t look away. She held his gaze until the heavy courtroom doors closed behind him for the final time.

“Ready to go home?” Marcus whispered, offering his arm.

Evelyn took it without hesitation. “More than ready.”
