Chapter 12 - The Hidden Truth

The following morning broke with crisp, golden autumn sunlight over Manhattan.

Evelyn sat by the window in Marcus’s safehouse living room, watching Lily color in a coloring book on the floor. The little girl was humming happily, safe, warm, and blissfully unaware of the storm that had ended just hours before.

Marcus walked into the room carrying a heavy manila envelope stamped with the seal of a private Swiss bank.

“What’s that?” Evelyn asked, setting down her cup of tea.

“This was in Julian’s luggage at Teterboro,” Marcus said, sitting opposite her. “It wasn't just cash and bearer bonds Julian was trying to smuggle out of the country.”

Marcus opened the folder and slid a yellowed birth record across the table.

Evelyn looked down at the paper. Her breath caught in her throat.

“Lily’s original birth certificate?” Evelyn frowned. “Why would he keep this in his private emergency stash?”

“Look at the biological father’s blood type, Evelyn,” Marcus pointed to the fine print at the bottom of the page. “Julian’s blood type is O-negative. Lily is AB-positive.”

Evelyn stared at the paper in utter confusion. “That’s impossible. Julian spent six years demanding DNA tests, claiming he was the sole patriarch, claiming Lily had to carry the Vance bloodline.”

“Julian knew Lily wasn't his biological daughter from the day she was born,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a solemn tone. “He hid the real test results from Eleanor and the board because he needed an heir to secure his grandfather’s two-hundred-million-dollar trust.”

Evelyn felt the room spin. “Then… who is Lily’s father?”

Marcus leaned back, his gaze steady and filled with an emotion Evelyn had never seen in him before.

Evelyn’s eyes widened in sheer, breathless shock as memories from a lifetime ago flooded back into her mind.
