Chapter 8 - The Interception

The blue and red flashers illuminated the entire block, casting long shadows against the brick facades.
Federal agents in windbreakers marked FBI - Financial Crimes Division poured out of unmarked sedans, storming the ground floor of the brownstone.
Victoria lay handcuffed on the floor, weeping in rage as two federal agents dragged her toward the elevator.
“You’re all dead!” Victoria screamed, thrashing against her restraints. “My mother will buy every judge in this district! Julian will destroy you!”
Marcus ignored her, standing beside the lead agent—a sharp-featured woman in her late forties named Special Agent Miller.
“We have the financial records from Geneva, Marcus,” Miller said, slipping a folder into her briefcase. “And your recording from the gala cleared Evelyn of the initial assault charges. It was clear self-defense.”
Evelyn opened the panic room. Lily ran straight into her arms, burying her small head into Evelyn’s chest, sobbing uncontrollably.
“Mommy’s here, baby. It’s over,” Evelyn rocked her gently, her own tears finally breaking through her stoic defense.
“Not quite over,” Agent Miller said, turning to Evelyn with a solemn expression. “Julian fled the gala before our team could secure the perimeter. He’s running on a private jet manifest out of Teterboro Airport in twenty minutes.”
“He’s leaving the country?” Evelyn looked up, her gaze hardening into ice.
“He’s fleeing to a non-extradition jurisdiction in South America,” Marcus added, pulling his coat on. “And he’s taking Eleanor with him. They’ve liquidated forty million dollars in bearer bonds from the family vault.”
Evelyn handed Lily to Marcus’s trusted security aide. “Stay with Lily. Keep her safe.”
“Evelyn, where are you going?” Marcus asked, catching her arm.

Evelyn looked down at her torn dress, the bruises on her neck, and the dirt on her hands. The fear was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.
“Julian spent six years making me feel powerless,” Evelyn said, her voice dead steady. “He doesn't get to run away into the sunset. I’m going to Teterboro.”
