Chapter 7 - The Ride Home

Clara sat in the back of the Maybach, wrapped in the heavy wool of her father’s coat. The seat heaters hummed quietly, slowly banishing the chill that had settled deep in her bones. Outside the tinted windows, the glowing lights of the Bel-Air estate faded into the rear-view mirror as the car glided smoothly down the canyon road.
Her father sat beside her, silent for the first few minutes, letting her catch her breath.
"You should have told me Arthur's son was giving you trouble months ago, Clara," he said gently. "You didn't need to endure this."
Clara stared down at the silver flash drive clutched tightly in her palm. "I wanted to do it on my own, Dad. I wanted people to judge my work because it was good, not because my last name is Vance. If I ran to you every time some entitled executive tried to take advantage of me, I'd never actually build anything of my own."
Mr. Vance smiled faintly, his dark eyes softening. "There's a difference between building your own foundation and letting hyenas chew on your heels, sweetheart. Pride is useful. But never let it blind you to real danger."
Clara leaned her head against his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. The adrenaline was finally leaving her system, leaving behind a dull ache in her back where Julian had shoved her.
"What's going to happen to the civic center now?" she asked quietly.
"Whatever you want to happen to it," her father replied. "The city council needs the development proposal submitted by Friday. With your drive back, you have three days to finalize the blue prints."
Clara looked out the window at the glittering skyline of Los Angeles below. The humiliation at the pool had burned, but the fire inside her now was different. It wasn't fear anymore.
It was resolve.
"I’m going to build it," she said firmly. "And I'm putting my real name on the cornerstone."
May you like
Her father patted her hand. "That's my girl."
The car turned onto the private highway toward the Vance compound, leaving the chaos of the night behind them.
