Chapter 1 - The Splash That Broke the Ice

The bass shook the limestone patio hard enough to ripple the crystal flute in Julian’s hand. Around the infinity pool of the Bel-Air estate, laughter drifted through the warm summer air, backed by clinking flutes and the faint scent of roasting garlic and chlorine. Julian wore a tailored navy suit with no tie, radiating the smug aura of a trust-fund heir who had never heard the word "no" in his entire twenty-six years of life.
Standing two feet away from the water’s edge was Clara. She wore a floor-length red silk dress that caught the underwater LED lights, her dark hair pinned in a loose, elegant chignon. She wasn't holding a drink. She was simply looking at Julian, her brown eyes pleading, trying to keep her voice below the roar of the house remix.
"Julian, please. Just let me have the thumb drive back," Clara said softly, stepping closer to keep the conversation private. "Those design files took me four months. They're my portfolio for the architecture grant."
Julian took a slow, theatrical sip of vintage champagne, glancing around to make sure half a dozen of his socialite friends were watching. "Your portfolio? Sweetheart, everything you made while working under my father's firm belongs to the firm. Meaning it belongs to me."
"I did that work off the clock! In my own apartment!" Clara’s voice cracked slightly, frustration bleeding through her composure. "You know you're lying!"
"Am I?" Julian sneered, leaning in close so only she could catch the venom in his breath. "Who are they gonna believe, Clara? A broke scholarship kid who lives off ramen, or the guy whose name is on the front lobby wall?"
"You're disgusting," she whispered, turning her back on him to walk toward the mansion doors.
Julian’s face tightened. In his world, no one walked away from him. Especially not a nobody in a thrift-store dress.
Without warning, Julian stepped forward and planted both palms firmly between Clara’s shoulder blades.
He shoved her with everything he had.
Clara gasped, her high heels skidding uselessly on the slick wet marble. Her arms flailed in a desperate attempt to catch the air, but momentum took over. Her red dress whipped around her legs as she tipped backward over the edge.
CRACK-SPLASH.
The impact shattered the surface like glass, sending a three-foot wave sloshing over the manicured poolside lawn.
The DJ cut the track. The entire patio went dead silent.
Clara sank under the chlorine haze, the heavy silk dragging her down like an anchor. Panic hit her chest, icy and sharp. She kicked frantically, struggling against the weighted fabric until her head finally breached the surface.
She gasped for air, coughing, her pinned hair now plastered flat against her cheeks. Water burned her nostrils. Shivering uncontrollably, she wiped her stinging eyes and looked up at the edge.
Julian wasn't looking concerned. He was laughing.
He already had his matte-black iPhone pulled out, holding it horizontally to frame her soaking-wet misery on video.
"Look at the little mermaid!" Julian yelled to the crowd, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the villa. "Someone call a lifeguard! Or maybe pest control!"
A few nervous chuckles rippled through the onlookers, but most stood paralyzed.
Clara clung to the smooth tile lip, her fingernails scraping against the stone. Tears carved warm tracks through the cold water on her cheeks. Her voice tore from her raw throat:
May you like
"Why are you doing this?!"
Julian didn't answer. He zoomed in on her face, grinning directly into his screen—until the low rumble of a heavy engine vibrated through the patio flagstones.
