Chapter 5 - The Price of a Video

Julian’s knees felt like water. His breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. The arrogance that had fueled him ten minutes ago had dissolved completely, leaving behind only the cold, hard realization that his life was over.

"I... I didn't know," Julian stammered, his teeth knocking together. "Mr. Vance, sir, I swear it was just a joke. We were playing around. Clara, tell him! We were just teasing each other!"

Clara pulled the heavy trench coat tighter around herself. She looked at Julian, not with anger, but with profound disappointment.

"You stole my portfolio drive to pass it off as your own design for the civic center project, Julian," Clara said, her voice clear and carrying over the silent yard. "And when I asked for it back, you tried to humiliate me so I’d quit and stay quiet."

Arthur’s head snapped toward Julian, his eyes wide with rage. "You did WHAT?!"

"I didn't! Dad, she’s lying!" Julian cried.

Mr. Vance raised a single hand, and the patio went quiet again instantly.

"Arthur," Mr. Vance murmured. "Where is the hard drive?"

Arthur scrambled to his feet, grabbed Julian by the collar of his navy suit, and shook him violently. "Give it to him! Give it to him right now or I swear I'll leave you with nothing!"

Julian fumbled with shaking hands, digging into his inner breast pocket. He pulled out a sleek silver flash drive and held it out with trembling fingers.

Mr. Vance took it, checked the engraved initials—C.V.—and handed it to Clara.

"Now," Mr. Vance said, turning his cold gaze back to Julian. "You thought soaking my daughter and broadcasting her humiliation to your friends was entertaining."

Julian swallowed hard, unable to speak.

"Take off your shoes," Mr. Vance instructed calmly.

"W-what?"

"Take off your shoes, your jacket, and your watch," Mr. Vance repeated without raising his voice. "And empty your pockets."

Julian looked desperately at his father, but Arthur was staring at the ground, trembling, completely unwilling to intervene. Slowly, feeling the eyes of every person he had spent years trying to impress, Julian kicked off his designer loafers. He peeled off his tailored jacket, stripped his platinum Rolex from his wrist, and dropped his wallet onto the ground.

"Now," Mr. Vance said, pointing a single finger at the dark water of the pool. "Get in."

Julian's eyes widened. "Mr. Vance, please—"

"Jump, Julian," Mr. Vance said, his tone flat. "Or my driver will throw you in. And then I will call the port authority to impound every shipping container Sterling Development currently has on the docks."

Julian looked at the black water. He looked at the circle of his peers, all of them staring with a mix of shock and schadenfreude.

He stepped to the edge of the pool.
