Chapter 14 - The Rebuilding

Three weeks later, the downtown construction site was crawling with over two hundred elite union workers, operating under the direct management of Vance Engineering.

Clara stood on the upper mezzanine, watching hydraulic jacks lift the cracked south wing so reinforced titanium-core pillars could be sunk forty feet into the bedrock. It cost twenty million dollars to fix the damage Julian had caused, but every cent was paid out of the seized Sterling family trust.

"The structural integrity is at two hundred percent," David reported, handing Clara a new green-stamped safety certificate. "This foundation will stand for a century."

Clara signed her name on the final inspection clearance. "Good. We open next month."

Her father walked up beside her, holding two paper cups of black coffee. He handed one to Clara, looking out over the sprawling complex of glass, steel, and stone.

"Arthur Sterling pleaded guilty this morning to federal fraud and racketeering," her father said quietly. "Twenty-five years at a federal penitentiary. No parole."

"And Julian?" Clara asked, taking a sip of the warm coffee.

"Attempted murder, corporate sabotage, and grand larceny," Mr. Vance replied, his tone indifferent. "His trial begins in the fall. He'll spend his youth behind bars, where his family name won't buy him a single favor."

Clara looked down at the massive main lobby, where sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass, illuminating the vibrant open space designed for students, artists, and citizens.

"I don't care about what happens to Julian anymore," Clara said softly. "He spent his whole life trying to tear people down. I'm going to spend mine building things that last."

Her father smiled proudly, clinking his paper cup against hers.
