Chapter 7 - The Safehouse in the Fog

Three hours later, the SUV navigated a winding, treacherous mountain trail enveloped in thick, knee-deep fog. Rain had begun to pour, hammering relentless against the windshield.

Julian pulled up to a secluded, rustic stone cabin nestled against the side of a steep cliff. The property was invisible from the main road, surrounded by dense pine trees and guarded by high iron gates that Julian opened with a physical key.

He killed the headlights and turned to the back seat. Elena was fast asleep, utterly exhausted, with the baby sleeping peacefully on her chest.

Julian sat in silence for a moment, watching the soft rise and fall of her chest. In the midst of the violent storm outside and the betrayal that had ripped his life apart, this quiet car felt like the only sacred place left on earth.

He stepped out, opened her door gently, and reached in. "Elena... we're here."

She woke up with a soft start, her eyes wide with lingering terror before she recognized Julian’s dark eyes staring down at her with unexpected gentleness.

"Let me carry him," Julian offered softly.

Elena hesitated for a brief second, then carefully passed the tiny yellow bundle into his massive hands. Julian held the newborn against his broad chest with astonishing tenderness, shielding the child from the mountain rain with his jacket as he led Elena into the warm shelter of the cabin.
