Chapter 1 - The Shadow at the Threshold

The grand double doors did not just open; they were violently breached, rattling against the polished marble walls like a crack of thunder. Mr. Rossi immediately dropped his body low, throwing his broad frame over the woman and his infant son like a biological shield. His right hand instinctively reached under his tailored suit jacket, fingers wrapping around the cold, textured grip of his concealed firearm.
The hallway outside was plunged into an eerie, unnatural silence. The bright chandelier lights had been cut, leaving only the dim amber glow of the nursery’s ambient sconces to illuminate the heavy dust motes floating in the air.
"Don't move a muscle," Rossi growled, his voice a low, vibrating whisper that rattled in his chest. His dark eyes flickered between the shadowed doorway and the terrified woman cowering beneath him.
"Mr. Rossi... what is happening?" she sobbed, clutching the baby tighter against her breast as the child let out a soft, disturbed whimpering sound.

"The house is compromised," Rossi snapped, his intense gaze never leaving the threshold. "My inner circle... someone turned off the security grid from the master console downstairs. Which means the enemy isn't coming from outside. They’ve been living in this house all along."
Suddenly, the soft, rhythmic clicking of leather soles echoed from the dark corridor. A tall, silhouette figure stepped into the doorway, framed by the pale light of the moon. Rossi's eyes narrowed as he recognized the man standing before him—a face he had trusted with his life for over a decade.
