Chapter 9 - The Third Bennett Son

Lucas stood holding the phone.
Nobody spoke.
“The son your father chose over both of you.”
The line clicked dead.
Lucas slowly lowered the receiver.
Daniel looked furious.
Not frightened.
Furious.
“You know him.”
Lucas said.
Daniel looked away.
“Daniel.”
Silence.
Lucas moved closer.
“Who is he?”
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Our brother.”
Lucas stared.
“No.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Yeah.”
“One more family secret.”
Lucas felt exhausted.
“How many?”
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“Ask Mom.”
Lucas turned.
Margaret's face had gone gray.
“Mom?”
She shook her head.
“I didn't know until later.”
Lucas laughed in disbelief.
“Of course.”
“What is his name?”
Margaret whispered:
“Ethan.”
Lucas had never heard the name.
“Ethan Bennett?”
“No.”
She looked down.
“Ethan Cole.”
Vanessa froze.
Richard stared at Margaret.
Then Daniel.
Then Lucas.
“What?”
Margaret wiped her face.
“Your father had an affair.”
Richard's expression changed.
“With who?”
Margaret looked directly at him.
“Your wife.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked between them.
“My mother?”
Richard stepped backward.
“No.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“It lasted years.”
Richard's face went red.
“You're lying.”
Daniel laughed.
“She isn't.”
Richard turned toward him.
Daniel continued.
“Ethan was born before Caroline.”
Vanessa looked sick.
“Ethan is my brother?”
“Half-brother.”
Margaret whispered.
“And Lucas's.”
Lucas stared at the floor.
His father had a child with Richard's wife.
A son hidden between two families.
“Where has he been?”
Daniel answered.
“Everywhere.”
Lucas looked up.
Daniel smiled without humor.
“Dad paid for his schools.”
“His apartments.”
“His first company.”
“He trained him.”
Lucas frowned.
“Trained him for what?”
“To run everything.”
Lucas stared.
Daniel continued.
“You and I were public heirs.”
“Ethan was the real one.”
“Why?”
“Because he had ties to both families.”
Bennett.
Cole.
Whitmore trust bloodline through his mother.
Lucas understood.
“He could access both sides.”
Daniel nodded.
“And when Caroline had Sophie...”
Vanessa whispered:
“Ethan lost priority.”
Everyone turned.
She looked horrified by her own conclusion.
“If Caroline's child inherited the Whitmore trust...”
Daniel finished.
“Ethan got almost nothing.”
Lucas felt the pieces lock together.
“So Caroline had to disappear.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Lucas stared at him.
“You told my father to stop Caroline.”
Richard whispered:
“Yes.”
“And Ethan benefited.”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he existed?”
Richard shook his head.
“Not then.”
Lucas almost believed him.
Almost.
Hale stepped closer.
“We need to find Emma.”
The tactical officer nodded.
“We're tracing the feed source.”
Lucas looked toward the dead monitors.
“No.”
Hale frowned.
“No what?”
“He told us where to go.”
“Your father's grave.”
Hale shook his head.
“Obviously a trap.”
Lucas looked at Sophie downstairs through the glass observation window.
“Yes.”
“But Rachel's evidence is there.”
Michael had told him.
And now Ethan wanted Sophie at the same place.
That could not be coincidence.
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“What is buried there?”
Daniel's face changed.
Lucas noticed.
“Something more than evidence.”
Daniel said nothing.
“What?”
Daniel stared at him.
“Dad's original will.”
Lucas frowned.
“His will was probated ten years ago.”
“Fake.”
Lucas froze.
“The real one?”
“Rachel found it.”
“Why would she hide it?”
“Because it names Ethan.”
“As heir?”
Daniel nodded.
Lucas stared.
“To what?”
“Everything illegal.”
Lucas almost laughed.
“What does that mean?”
“Dad created a private holding company.”
“Not Bennett Development.”
“Something else.”
“Horizon Group.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Lucas looked at him.
“You know it.”
Richard whispered:
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“The shell above all the shells.”
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Exactly.”
Lucas felt anger returning.
“Money.”
“Property.”
“Offshore accounts.”
“Political payments.”
“Private security contractors.”
“Everything.”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
“And Ethan owns it?”
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
Daniel glanced toward Sophie.
Lucas followed his eyes.
Then understood.
“The will requires something from her.”
Daniel nodded.
“What?”
“Her signature.”
Lucas stared.
“She's six.”
“When she turns seven, a custodial trustee can sign.”
Lucas felt cold.
“Who is trustee?”
Daniel smiled.
“Her biological family representative.”
Lucas turned toward Vanessa.
She went pale.
“Me?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Ethan.”
Lucas stared.
“Because he's Caroline's half-brother.”
“Yes.”
Everything snapped into place.
Ethan needed Sophie.
Alive.
Legally recognized.
Under his control.
The wedding would place Vanessa close enough to Sophie to create custody chaos.
Lucas would be removed.
Vanessa would become stepmother.
Ethan could challenge guardianship as blood family.
Daniel could control the Bennett company.
Everyone got something.
Except Sophie.
Lucas looked at his daughter through the glass.
A child surrounded by adults who saw her as a key.
An inheritance.
A signature.
A legal bridge.
He whispered:
“Not anymore.”
Hale turned.
“What?”
Lucas looked at Daniel.
Then Richard.
Then Vanessa.
“Every one of you treated Sophie like an asset.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I—”
“Don't.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No more excuses.”
He turned to Hale.
“We go to the cemetery.”
Hale sighed.
“Lucas.”
“With tactical backup.”
Hale studied him.
Then nodded.
The cemetery was forty minutes away.
They arrived after dark.
Rain had begun falling.
Lucas stepped from the SUV.
He held Sophie's hand.
Hale hated bringing her.
Lucas hated it more.
But Ethan demanded her presence.
And Lucas knew refusing might make him move against Emma.
Sophie wore Lucas's jacket over her flower-girl dress.
She looked up at him.
“Are we going to see Grandpa?”
Lucas knelt.
“Yes.”
“Is he in heaven?”
Lucas swallowed.
“I hope he learned something there.”
Sophie frowned.
Lucas kissed her forehead.
“Stay beside me.”
Margaret remained in the armored vehicle.
Vanessa insisted on coming.
Richard was under police guard.
Daniel had been transported separately.
Only Lucas, Sophie, Vanessa, and Hale approached the grave.
The headstone stood beneath a large oak tree.
EDWARD BENNETT
Beloved Husband.
Father.
Leader.
Lucas almost laughed at the words.
Hale shined a flashlight along the base.
“There.”
A thin metal seam.
Exactly where Michael described it.
Lucas crouched.
He pressed beneath the stone.
A hidden panel released.
Inside sat a metal box.
Sophie whispered:
“Daddy?”
Lucas lifted it.
Heavy.
Locked.
Vanessa looked around.
“Where is Ethan?”
Hale raised one hand.
Tactical officers remained hidden among nearby trees.
Lucas studied the box.
There was a small biometric scanner.
Then a child's fingerprint symbol.
His stomach dropped.
“Sophie.”
She looked up.
“What?”
Lucas stared at the scanner.
“He needs her fingerprint.”
Vanessa whispered:
“That's why he needed her.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“Finally.”
Everyone turned.
A man stepped between the trees.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Forty-two.
His face stopped Lucas cold.
He looked like Edward Bennett.
Their father.
Younger.
Sharper.
But unmistakable.
Ethan Cole.
He smiled.
“Hello, brother.”
Hale reached toward his weapon.
Ethan raised one hand.
“Don't.”
A red laser appeared on Vanessa's chest.
Then another on Hale.
Then Lucas.
Snipers.
Ethan smiled.
“Your tactical team was predictable.”
Lucas stared.
“Where is Emma?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
Ethan took out a phone.
Video appeared.
Emma sat inside a van.
Breathing.
Alive.
Lucas looked back at Ethan.
“Let her go.”
“Open the box.”
Lucas looked at the biometric scanner.
Ethan smiled.
“Sophie.”
Lucas stepped in front of her.
“No.”
“Lucas.”
“No.”
Ethan sighed.
“Dad always said you were emotional.”
Lucas stared at him.
“You murdered Caroline.”
Ethan's expression didn't change.
“She was going to destroy everything.”
Vanessa gasped.
Lucas felt cold.
“You admit it.”
“I solved a problem.”
Vanessa moved forward.
“You killed my sister.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You barely remember her.”
Vanessa's face twisted.
“She was my sister.”
“She was inconvenient.”
Vanessa slapped him.
Hard.
The sound cracked through the rain.
Every laser moved.
Lucas shouted:
“Don't!”
Ethan slowly turned his face back.
Blood touched his lip.
Then he smiled.
“There's the Cole temper.”
Vanessa stepped back.
Ethan looked toward Sophie.
“Open it.”
Lucas shook his head.
“No.”
Ethan held up the phone.
The video of Emma changed.
A timer appeared.
Three minutes.
Lucas felt his stomach drop.
Ethan said:
“When the timer reaches zero, the van burns.”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Lucas stared at him.
“You're sick.”
Ethan smiled.
“Open the box.”
Sophie tugged Lucas's jacket.
“Daddy.”
He looked down.
“I can do it.”
“No.”
“If it saves the lady.”
Lucas felt his heart crack.
She was six.
And already braver than every adult around her.
Lucas knelt.
“Sophie.”
She whispered:
“Mommy would help her.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
Rachel would.
He knew she would.
Lucas looked toward Hale.
The detective gave the smallest nod.
Tactical team still waiting.
Lucas lifted Sophie.
She placed her thumb on the scanner.
Green light.
The box clicked.
Ethan's smile widened.
Lucas opened it.
Inside were several folders.
A flash drive.
A sealed envelope.
And one old photograph.
Lucas picked it up.
His breath stopped.
The photograph showed Rachel.
Caroline.
And Ethan.
Together.
Alive.
Smiling.
Lucas stared.
“What the hell is this?”
Ethan's expression changed for the first time.
Lucas turned the photograph over.
Rachel had written something on the back.
CAROLINE DIDN'T DIE THAT NIGHT.
Vanessa gasped.
Lucas looked toward Ethan.
His face went completely pale.
Then a woman's voice came from behind the oak tree.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped into the rain.
Older.
Thin.
Scar across one cheek.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
“Caroline?”
The woman looked at her.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Hi, little sister.”
Ethan backed away.
“No.”
May you like
Caroline looked directly at him.
“You should have made sure I was dead.”
