Chapter 11 - The Tracker in Rachel’s Box

The convoy moved through the rain toward downtown Chicago.
Lucas sat in the back of the armored SUV with Sophie pressed against his side.
She had finally fallen asleep.
Her flower-girl dress was wrinkled.
Lucas's jacket covered her tiny body.
One shoe was missing.
Her fingers were still wrapped around the gold button Rachel had left behind.
Lucas watched her breathe.
That was all he cared about now.
Not Bennett Development.
Not the wedding.
Not the three hundred million dollars.
Not the family name.
Just Sophie.
Alive.
Safe.
Beside him, Caroline stared through the rain-covered window.
Vanessa sat across from them.
Nobody spoke.
The silence lasted almost ten minutes.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Lucas.”
He didn't look at her.
“What?”
“I need to tell you something before we get there.”
Lucas's expression hardened.
“I'm running out of patience for sentences that begin that way.”
“I know.”
“Then say it.”
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
“The bathroom wasn't Daniel's idea.”
Lucas slowly turned.
“What?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“It was mine.”
Caroline looked at her sister.
“Vanessa.”
She shook her head.
“I need him to know everything.”
Lucas stared at her.
“Explain.”
Vanessa's hands trembled.
“Daniel told me Sophie had Rachel's evidence.”
“He said I had one chance to find it before the ceremony.”
“I searched her basket.”
“She wouldn't tell me where the button was.”
Lucas's jaw tightened.
“So you locked her inside.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa began crying.
“Because Daniel told me people were coming.”
“What people?”
“Arthur's men.”
“He said if Sophie was seen in the ballroom, they would take her.”
Lucas stared.
“So you thought locking her in a bathroom would protect her?”
“I panicked.”
“You could have come to me.”
“I know.”
“You could have canceled the wedding.”
“I know.”
“You could have called the police.”
“I didn't know which police officers Daniel controlled.”
Lucas had no answer to that.
Because neither did he.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I told Sophie she wouldn't be family anymore.”
Lucas's eyes hardened.
“Why?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I wanted her to hate me.”
Caroline stared at her.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought if she hated me, she would stay away from me.”
“Away from the ceremony.”
“Away from Daniel.”
“Away from whatever was about to happen.”
Lucas looked at her for a long moment.
“That doesn't excuse what you did.”
“I know.”
“You terrified her.”
“I know.”
“She thought I was replacing her with you.”
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I know.”
Lucas turned toward Sophie.
“Then you'll live with knowing that.”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I will.”
Lucas expected anger.
Instead he felt tired.
So tired.
Caroline reached across and squeezed Vanessa's hand.
Lucas looked away.
Then Sophie's eyes opened.
“Daddy?”
He immediately softened.
“I'm here.”
She looked around.
“Are we going home?”
“Soon.”
“Is Vanessa still getting married?”
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked down.
Lucas brushed Sophie's hair away from her forehead.
“No.”
Sophie thought about that.
“Because she was mean?”
Lucas glanced at Vanessa.
“Because adults sometimes make choices they can't undo.”
Sophie frowned.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“Are you sorry?”
Vanessa's face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Sophie stared at her.
“For locking me in?”
“Yes.”
“For saying I'm not family?”
“Yes.”
Sophie remained quiet.
Then said:
“That was really mean.”
Vanessa nodded through tears.
“It was.”
Sophie leaned against Lucas again.
“I don't forgive you yet.”
Lucas almost smiled.
Vanessa did too.
“That seems fair.”
The SUV suddenly slowed.
Hale's voice came through the radio.
“Lucas.”
He picked it up.
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
Lucas immediately sat straighter.
“What?”
“Someone is following the convoy.”
Lucas looked through the rear window.
Nothing obvious.
“How many?”
“Two vehicles.”
“Could be nothing.”
“Could be.”
Hale paused.
“But they changed lanes every time we did.”
Caroline turned.
“Ethan.”
Lucas looked at the metal evidence box on the floor.
Something bothered him.
Ethan had escaped too easily.
Arthur knew where they were going.
And now someone knew their exact route.
Lucas stared at the box.
“Stop the car.”
Vanessa frowned.
“What?”
Lucas leaned down.
“Stop the damn car.”
The convoy pulled beneath an overpass.
Lucas opened the door.
Hale approached.
“What are you doing?”
Lucas lifted the metal box.
“Scan this.”
“For what?”
“Tracker.”
Hale's expression changed.
One tactical officer brought a handheld detector.
He moved it around the box.
Beep.
Everyone froze.
Again.
Beep.
The officer turned the box over.
A tiny black device was attached beneath the hinge.
Hale cursed.
Lucas stared at it.
“They've been watching us.”
Caroline whispered:
“Not anymore.”
She ripped the tracker free.
Hale stopped her.
“Wait.”
Lucas understood.
“Don't destroy it.”
Caroline looked at him.
Lucas smiled coldly.
“Let's send Ethan somewhere else.”
Ten minutes later, the tracker was attached beneath an empty police transport van.
The van headed north.
Lucas's convoy went west.
Hale watched the traffic feed on his tablet.
The two suspicious vehicles followed the decoy.
Lucas smiled.
“Good.”
Caroline looked at him.
“You're more like Rachel than I expected.”
Lucas stared out the window.
“She was smarter.”
Caroline smiled sadly.
“Much.”
Lucas almost laughed.
Then his phone rang.
Michael Reeves.
Lucas answered.
“Michael?”
“Where are you?”
“Moving.”
“You found the box?”
“Yes.”
“Is the drive there?”
“Yes.”
Michael exhaled.
“Don't plug it into anything.”
Lucas frowned.
“Why?”
“Rachel encrypted it.”
“That's good.”
“No.”
Michael's voice became urgent.
“She also booby-trapped the data.”
Lucas stared at the flash drive in the evidence bag.
“What does that mean?”
“If someone enters the wrong password three times, it wipes itself.”
Lucas looked at Caroline.
“Do you know the password?”
Caroline shook her head.
Michael continued.
“Rachel told me Lucas would know it.”
Lucas frowned.
“I don't.”
“She said you would.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Michael paused.
“She said, ‘He'll remember the first place Sophie became ours.’”
Lucas froze.
The first place Sophie became ours.
Not the hospital.
Not their house.
He remembered.
Rachel had struggled after bringing Sophie home.
She couldn't sleep.
She was terrified something would happen to the baby.
One night, three weeks after Sophie's birth, Lucas found Rachel sitting on the floor of Sophie's nursery.
She was crying.
Lucas sat beside her.
Rachel whispered:
“I don't know if I'm doing this right.”
Lucas had taken her hand.
Then baby Sophie opened her eyes.
She reached one tiny hand between the crib rails.
Rachel gave her a finger.
Sophie held it.
Rachel laughed through tears.
And Lucas said:
“That's it.”
“What?”
“We're a family.”
Rachel smiled.
“Right here?”
“Right here.”
The nursery.
Lucas whispered:
“Moonlight.”
Michael went quiet.
“What?”
Lucas remembered the wallpaper.
Rachel had chosen it.
Tiny silver moons.
She called Sophie's room the moonlight room.
“The password is Moonlight.”
Caroline smiled.
“Rachel.”
Lucas felt tears burn his eyes.
“Yes.”
Hale's radio interrupted.
“We're approaching the garage.”
Lucas's expression hardened.
“Time to get Emma.”
The old Bennett maintenance garage occupied half a city block.
Most of it had been abandoned for years.
Lucas remembered visiting as a teenager.
His father used to keep construction equipment there.
Caroline pointed toward an alley.
“The utility entrance is behind that building.”
Hale stopped the convoy two blocks away.
Lucas crouched beside Sophie.
“You stay here.”
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
“With Grandma.”
Margaret had rejoined them after the cemetery.
She reached for Sophie.
Lucas kissed his daughter's forehead.
“I need to help Emma.”
Sophie looked worried.
“Will you come back?”
“Yes.”
“Promise?”
“Always.”
She gave him the gold button.
“Take Mommy.”
Lucas stared at it.
Then closed his hand around the tiny object.
“I will.”
Vanessa started toward the garage.
Lucas stopped her.
“No.”
She stared.
“Emma was my bridesmaid.”
“She was there because of me.”
“Vanessa.”
“I'm going.”
Caroline stepped beside her.
“So am I.”
Lucas sighed.
“You two really are sisters.”
Caroline smiled.
“Unfortunately.”
They entered through the utility tunnel.
Hale led.
Two tactical officers followed.
Lucas.
Caroline.
Vanessa.
Another four officers behind them.
The tunnel smelled like rust and standing water.
They reached an old steel staircase.
Caroline pointed upward.
“That opens behind the machine room.”
Hale signaled.
One officer climbed.
Opened the hatch.
Clear.
They entered.
Darkness.
Old machinery.
Dust.
A red door stood across the room.
Lucas recognized it from Emma's description.
Hale approached.
He opened it.
Empty.
Only a chair.
Rope.
And Emma's phone.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.”
Lucas looked around.
“They moved her.”
A speaker crackled overhead.
Arthur Wynn's voice filled the garage.
“Welcome home, Lucas.”
Lights snapped on.
Lucas looked upward.
Cameras.
Everywhere.
Arthur continued:
“Your father loved this building.”
“He made his first million here.”
Lucas shouted:
“Where is Emma?”
Arthur laughed.
“Closer than you think.”
A pounding sound came from beneath them.
Lucas froze.
Then a woman's muffled scream.
Below the floor.
Caroline pointed.
“Basement.”
Hale moved toward a staircase.
The door slammed shut automatically.
Metal shutters dropped over every exit.
Hale cursed.
Arthur's voice returned.
“You should have brought Sophie.”
Lucas looked at the cameras.
“You'll never touch her.”
Arthur laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
“Ethan doesn't need to touch Sophie.”
“He only needs the world to believe you can't protect her.”
Lucas's stomach tightened.
“What?”
Arthur continued.
“Kidnapping.”
“Gunfire.”
“Family criminal investigations.”
“A father repeatedly placing a child in dangerous situations.”
Lucas realized.
“Custody.”
Caroline whispered.
Arthur laughed.
“Exactly.”
“If Lucas is declared unfit, who becomes the nearest biological relative?”
Caroline's face went pale.
“Me.”
“No.”
Arthur said.
“You're legally dead.”
Caroline froze.
Arthur continued.
“Ethan.”
Lucas felt cold.
This had never only been about kidnapping Sophie.
They were building a legal case to take her.
Lucas stared into the nearest camera.
“You're not getting my daughter.”
Arthur answered calmly:
“We already filed the petition.”
Lucas froze.
“What?”
“Emergency guardianship.”
“Filed forty minutes ago.”
“Using video from today.”
Lucas felt sick.
The bathroom.
The kidnapping.
The cemetery.
Everything had been recorded.
Edited.
Reframed.
Arthur continued.
“And there's one more piece.”
A monitor switched on.
Video appeared.
Lucas stared.
It showed him in the cemetery.
Standing beside Sophie.
A gunshot sounded.
Lucas threw himself over her.
But the video had been edited.
The earlier context was missing.
It looked like Lucas had brought Sophie into an armed confrontation.
Arthur laughed.
“Powerful image.”
Lucas's fists tightened.
Caroline stared at the screen.
“Who is the judge?”
Silence.
Arthur laughed.
“Very good.”
Caroline looked at Lucas.
“They have someone in family court.”
Arthur's voice returned.
“Tomorrow morning, Ethan Cole will request emergency custody of Sophie Bennett.”
Lucas stared at the camera.
“Tomorrow morning Ethan will be in jail.”
Arthur laughed.
“Then you better find him.”
A mechanical sound came from beneath the floor.
Lucas looked down.
The pounding stopped.
Then water began rising through the basement grate.
Vanessa screamed:
“Emma!”
Lucas ran toward the floor hatch.
Locked.
He grabbed a metal bar.
Hale joined him.
Together they forced it.
Below them, Emma was tied to a chair.
Water already reached her waist.
“Lucas!”
“I'm coming!”
He climbed down.
Caroline followed.
Vanessa tried.
Lucas shouted:
“Stay up there!”
For once, she listened.
Lucas reached Emma.
He cut the rope around her hands.
The water rose rapidly.
“Where is Arthur?”
Emma coughed.
“Gone.”
“Where?”
“I heard him say airport.”
Caroline froze.
“Ethan.”
Lucas looked at her.
“They're leaving?”
“No.”
Caroline's face changed.
“They're bringing someone in.”
“Who?”
Emma looked at Lucas.
“I heard a name.”
“What name?”
She coughed again.
“Rebecca.”
Lucas froze.
“Rebecca Shaw?”
Emma nodded.
Lucas stared at Caroline.
Michael had said Rebecca Shaw was dead.
The FBI agent who investigated Rachel.
Dead six weeks before Rachel.
Caroline whispered:
“She isn't dead.”
Lucas felt the entire case change again.
Emma grabbed his arm.
“There was something else.”
“What?”
“Arthur said Rebecca had the original recording.”
Lucas frowned.
“What recording?”
May you like
Emma looked terrified.
“Rachel's crash.”
