Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

The wedding was supposed to begin in seven minutes.

Instead, Lucas Bennett was kneeling on a marble hallway floor with his six-year-old daughter trembling in his arms.

“Daddy...”

Sophie buried her face against his shoulder.

“I want to go home.”

Lucas held her tighter.

His heart was pounding so hard he could hear it.

Around them, the wedding continued pretending nothing was wrong.

A violin played somewhere inside the ballroom.

Guests whispered behind champagne glasses.

A photographer stood frozen near the hallway entrance with his camera hanging uselessly from his hand.

And twenty feet away stood Vanessa Cole.

The woman Lucas was supposed to marry.

She looked flawless.

Her white gown had been custom-made in Paris.

Pearls were sewn along the neckline.

A long lace veil fell over her shoulders.

But her face was no longer beautiful.

It was terrified.

Lucas slowly stood.

Sophie refused to release him.

Her little arms remained wrapped around his neck.

“What did you say to her?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Lucas, this is obviously a misunderstanding.”

Sophie shook her head immediately.

“No.”

That one tiny word cut through the hallway.

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward her.

For half a second, something changed in the bride's expression.

Not embarrassment.

Not guilt.

Anger.

Lucas saw it.

So did his mother.

Margaret Bennett stepped out from among the guests.

“What happened?”

Lucas didn't take his eyes off Vanessa.

“Someone locked Sophie in the bathroom.”

A murmur spread through the hallway.

Margaret's face changed.

“What?”

“She says Vanessa did it.”

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That is ridiculous.”

Sophie flinched.

Lucas felt it.

He looked down at his daughter.

“Sweetheart, look at me.”

She slowly raised her face.

Her cheeks were wet.

Mascara from the little bit of makeup the bridesmaids had put on her had smeared beneath her eyes.

Her flower-girl crown hung crooked in her hair.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lucas, maybe we shouldn't interrogate a frightened child in front of—”

“Don't.”

Lucas's voice stopped her.

He had never spoken to Vanessa that way before.

She froze.

Lucas looked back at Sophie.

“Tell me.”

Sophie rubbed her nose against her sleeve.

“She came into the room.”

“Who?”

Sophie pointed.

“Vanessa.”

Several guests gasped.

Vanessa's mother, Diane Cole, pushed through the crowd.

“This is absurd.”

Lucas ignored her.

“What happened next?”

Sophie looked frightened to continue.

Lucas lowered his voice.

“You're safe.”

She nodded.

“She told Emma to leave.”

Emma was one of Vanessa's bridesmaids.

Lucas looked around.

“Where is Emma?”

Nobody answered.

That bothered him.

Sophie continued.

“Then Vanessa closed the door.”

“What did she say?”

Sophie stared at Vanessa.

“She asked if I remembered Mommy.”

Lucas stopped breathing.

His late wife.

Rachel.

Even hearing the name in his own mind hurt.

Rachel had died four years earlier.

Sophie had been two.

Lucas had spent years rebuilding their lives.

He had never asked Vanessa to replace Rachel.

He had only asked her to love Sophie.

At least he thought he had.

“What else?”

Lucas asked.

Sophie twisted the ribbon on her flower basket.

“She asked if Mommy ever gave me something.”

Vanessa's face went completely still.

Lucas noticed.

“What something?”

“I didn't know.”

Sophie whispered.

“She got mad.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“That is not what happened.”

Lucas turned toward her.

“Then tell me what happened.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Her mother grabbed her arm.

It was subtle.

Almost invisible.

But Lucas saw that too.

Diane smiled nervously.

“Lucas, emotions are high.”

“This is a wedding.”

“Children misunderstand things.”

Margaret stared at her.

“Children don't accidentally lock themselves inside bathrooms.”

Diane's smile disappeared.

Sophie tugged Lucas's collar.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“She looked in my flower basket.”

Lucas glanced at the basket lying beside the bathroom door.

White roses were scattered across the floor.

“What was she looking for?”

“I don't know.”

Vanessa whispered something under her breath.

Lucas turned.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Then Sophie pointed again.

Not at Vanessa's face.

Lower.

At her dress.

“She put something there.”

The hallway became silent.

Lucas followed Sophie's finger.

Vanessa instinctively pressed one hand against the side of her gown.

Lucas saw it.

A tiny movement.

But unmistakable.

“What did you put under your dress?”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

“Lucas, I'm wearing a wedding gown.”

“I can see that.”

“Then stop humiliating me.”

His jaw tightened.

“My daughter was locked in a bathroom.”

“You're humiliating yourself.”

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

The sweetness vanished.

“This wedding cost nearly two hundred thousand dollars.”

“There are three hundred people waiting inside.”

“My father's business partners are here.”

“The mayor is here.”

“And you're stopping everything because a six-year-old had a tantrum?”

Sophie buried her face against Lucas again.

That was the moment something inside him changed.

He looked at Vanessa.

Really looked at her.

For months, he had explained away little things.

Vanessa becoming irritated when Sophie interrupted dinner.

Vanessa insisting Sophie spend weekends with Lucas's mother.

Vanessa complaining that Rachel's photographs made the house feel “haunted.”

Vanessa suggesting they move after the wedding.

Vanessa wanting Sophie's bedroom relocated to the opposite side of the house.

Every incident had seemed small.

Separate.

Reasonable enough to excuse.

Now they suddenly felt connected.

Lucas stepped toward her.

“Show me.”

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

“Whatever Sophie saw you put under your dress.”

“No.”

One word.

Too fast.

Too frightened.

Lucas stared at her.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

“I mean... there's nothing there.”

“Then prove it.”

Diane stepped between them.

“Absolutely not.”

Margaret moved beside her son.

“Then perhaps we should call security.”

Vanessa's father appeared at the far end of the hallway.

Richard Cole was a wealthy real estate developer who rarely raised his voice because he had spent thirty years becoming powerful enough that he didn't need to.

“What the hell is going on?”

Diane hurried toward him.

“Richard—”

Lucas cut her off.

“Sophie says Vanessa locked her in a bathroom after searching her flower basket.”

Richard's eyes moved to his daughter.

Something passed between them.

Recognition.

Lucas caught it.

Richard recovered quickly.

“This is nonsense.”

“Then explain why Vanessa won't show us what she's hiding.”

Richard stared at him.

“You're asking my daughter to lift her wedding dress in a hallway?”

“No.”

Lucas pointed toward the bridal suite.

“She can go inside with my mother.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Again.

Too fast.

Richard's expression hardened.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

“Dad.”

That single word sounded like a warning.

Sophie suddenly whispered into Lucas's ear.

“She said Grandpa Richard would be angry if she didn't find it.”

Lucas slowly looked toward Richard.

The man's face lost its color.

“What did you just say?”

Richard asked.

Sophie shrank back.

Lucas moved between them.

“Don't speak to her like that.”

Richard stared at Sophie.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at the flower basket.

Lucas's instincts screamed.

Something was very wrong.

“Call security.”

Lucas said.

Richard stepped forward.

“You're making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

Lucas pulled out his phone.

“But it's my mistake to make.”

Vanessa suddenly turned.

She grabbed the side of her gown.

And ran.

People shouted.

Lucas handed Sophie to Margaret.

“Stay with Grandma.”

Then he chased his bride.

Vanessa kicked off one heel.

Then the other.

She lifted the enormous skirt and sprinted toward the service corridor.

“Vanessa!”

She didn't stop.

A waiter jumped aside.

A tray of champagne crashed against the wall.

Vanessa shoved through a gray service door.

Lucas followed.

The corridor behind the ballroom was narrow and empty.

“Stop!”

Vanessa reached the emergency stairwell.

Lucas caught the door before it closed.

He followed her down one flight.

Then another.

Vanessa stumbled.

Something tore beneath her gown.

A small black object dropped onto the concrete stairs.

Lucas stopped.

Vanessa did too.

They both stared at it.

It was a phone.

Not Vanessa's regular phone.

Lucas knew that because he had bought her regular phone.

This one was cheap.

Black.

Disposable.

A burner.

Vanessa lunged for it.

Lucas got there first.

“Give it to me!”

She grabbed his wrist.

Lucas pulled away.

“Why do you have this?”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“Lucas.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not soft tears.

Desperate ones.

“Please give me the phone.”

He looked at the screen.

It was locked.

A notification appeared.

One new message.

No name.

Just a number.

Lucas read the preview.

DID YOU FIND WHAT THE GIRL HAS?

His stomach dropped.

Another message appeared.

WE CAN'T LET BENNETT SEE THE DOCUMENT.

Lucas slowly lifted his eyes toward Vanessa.

“What document?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was shorter.

IF YOU FAILED, GET THE GIRL OUT BEFORE THE CEREMONY.

Lucas felt something cold move through him.

“You weren't trying to keep Sophie out of the wedding.”

Vanessa started crying.

“You were looking for something she has.”

“Lucas, please.”

“What?”

She shook her head.

“I can't tell you.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward the stairwell above them.

Fear entered her eyes.

Real fear.

“Because my father will destroy everything.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Richard Cole appeared at the top of the stairs.

He looked down at Lucas.

Then at the burner phone.

His expression changed.

“Give me that phone.”

Lucas tightened his grip.

Richard descended one step.

“You have no idea what you've just stepped into.”

Lucas stared at the man who, ten minutes earlier, was supposed to become his father-in-law.

“Then tell me.”

Richard stopped.

His eyes were cold.

“This stopped being about your wedding years ago.”

Lucas frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked toward the hallway.

Toward Sophie.

Then he said the one name Lucas never expected to hear.

“Rachel.”

Lucas froze.

“My wife?”

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Your first wife knew exactly what was hidden.”

Lucas felt the stairwell tilt beneath him.

“Hidden where?”

Richard looked at the burner phone.

Then back at Lucas.

May you like

“Inside something she left for Sophie.”

And upstairs, Sophie suddenly screamed.
