Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Died Twice

They got Emma out with seconds to spare.
The basement pumps had been remotely reversed.
Water had poured through old fire-control pipes.
Hale's team shut the system down.
Emma sat wrapped in a blanket inside an ambulance.
Vanessa stayed beside her.
Lucas stood outside in the rain.
His phone pressed to his ear.
Michael Reeves answered.
“Rebecca Shaw is alive.”
Silence.
Then Michael whispered:
“Who told you?”
“Emma.”
Another pause.
“Michael.”
“I thought she was dead.”
“Did you see her body?”
“No.”
“Then why did you believe it?”
“Because Rachel did.”
Lucas frowned.
“Rachel believed Rebecca died?”
“Yes.”
“That's why she panicked.”
“She thought anyone connected to the case was being eliminated.”
Lucas stared toward the garage.
“What if Rebecca faked her death?”
Michael went quiet.
Lucas continued.
“What if she went undercover?”
“That would explain why federal investigators never reopened Rachel's case.”
“Maybe.”
“Or Rebecca was compromised.”
Lucas hated that possibility.
“Where would she arrive?”
Michael thought.
“If Arthur said airport, not O'Hare.”
“Too public.”
“Midway?”
“No.”
“Private aviation.”
Lucas immediately knew.
“Lakeview Executive.”
Michael agreed.
Lucas hung up.
Hale approached.
“I heard.”
Lucas nodded.
“Lakeview.”
Hale sighed.
“You realize every location we've gone to today has become a trap.”
“Yes.”
“And we're going anyway?”
“Yes.”
Hale almost smiled.
“I knew you'd say that.”
Lucas looked toward the ambulance.
Vanessa was helping Emma drink water.
Caroline sat beside them.
Lucas walked over.
“Vanessa.”
She looked up.
“Stay with Emma.”
“No.”
“Not negotiable.”
“Lucas.”
“Today started because you made the wrong choice when you were afraid.”
She flinched.
Lucas continued.
“Make the right one now.”
“Emma needs someone she trusts.”
Vanessa looked at Emma.
Emma quietly nodded.
Vanessa exhaled.
“Fine.”
Lucas turned.
Vanessa grabbed his hand.
He looked down.
She released him immediately.
“Sorry.”
Lucas said nothing.
Vanessa looked into his eyes.
“Bring Caroline back.”
Lucas glanced at her sister.
“I'll try.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.”
“Bring her back.”
Lucas understood.
Vanessa had lost Caroline once.
She couldn't survive losing her again.
“I will.”
Caroline heard.
She smiled faintly.
“You two would have been terrible at marriage.”
Lucas looked at her.
“Thank you.”
“I'm serious.”
“That's worse.”
For the first time all day, Caroline laughed.
Then they left.
Lakeview Executive Airport sat forty-five minutes outside downtown.
Small.
Private.
Quiet.
Hale contacted federal authorities on the way.
This time he bypassed local command.
The response was immediate.
A federal tactical unit was moving.
Lucas received another message from Janet.
BOARD MEETING CALLED FOR 9 A.M. TOMORROW.
Then:
DANIEL REQUESTED REMOVAL OF YOU AS CEO.
Lucas stared at it.
Even arrested, Daniel was still moving pieces.
He called Janet.
“Delay the meeting.”
“How?”
“Fire alarm.”
“Lucas.”
“I'm serious.”
She laughed nervously.
“I know.”
“Can you?”
“I can delay them legally for two hours.”
“Do it.”
“Lucas.”
“Yes?”
“Arthur's office was emptied.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
Lucas frowned.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
Janet continued.
“And I found something.”
“What?”
“A transfer.”
“How much?”
“Not money.”
“Then what?”
“Shares.”
Lucas sat straighter.
“Whose?”
“Your father's.”
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Someone has been voting a hidden block of Bennett shares through Horizon Group.”
Lucas knew the answer before asking.
“Ethan.”
“Looks like it.”
“How much?”
“Seventeen percent.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
Daniel had eleven.
Arthur controlled proxies totaling nine.
Together.
Thirty-seven percent.
Enough to create chaos.
Not enough for control.
Unless Lucas disappeared.
Or became legally compromised.
The custody petition.
Financial confession.
Criminal investigation.
Everything was connected.
Janet whispered:
“Lucas, they're trying to remove you tomorrow.”
“I know.”
“What do you want me to do?”
Lucas looked at the flash drive.
“Prepare the clean transition plan.”
“What?”
“Rachel left instructions.”
Silence.
Janet knew Rachel.
They had been friends.
Her voice changed.
“Rachel?”
“Yes.”
Janet began crying quietly.
Lucas swallowed.
“I'll explain later.”
“Okay.”
“Protect the employees.”
“I will.”
“And Janet?”
“Yes?”
“Don't trust anyone.”
She laughed sadly.
“I think we're past that.”
They arrived at Lakeview shortly before midnight.
Federal vehicles waited without lights.
An agent approached.
“Lucas Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“Special Agent Maria Torres.”
Lucas shook her hand.
“Rebecca Shaw.”
Torres's expression changed.
“How do you know that name?”
“She investigated my company.”
Torres stared.
“Rebecca Shaw officially died four years ago.”
“I know.”
Torres looked toward Caroline.
Then back.
“Why do you think she's here?”
Lucas explained.
Torres listened.
When he finished, she looked deeply concerned.
“There is no scheduled arrival under Shaw.”
“Check aliases.”
“Which?”
Lucas looked at Caroline.
She thought.
Then whispered:
“Rachel called her Sparrow.”
Torres frowned.
“Sparrow?”
“Code name.”
Torres checked her tablet.
Then froze.
“What?”
Hale asked.
Torres turned the screen.
One incoming private aircraft.
Passenger manifest:
SARAH SPARROW.
Landing in twelve minutes.
Lucas stared.
“She wants us to know.”
Torres nodded.
“Or someone wants you to think she does.”
They waited inside a dark hangar.
The plane landed at 12:17 a.m.
A small Gulfstream.
It taxied toward the private terminal.
Door opened.
One man stepped out.
Security.
Then another.
Finally, a woman.
Mid-fifties.
Short gray hair.
Long black coat.
She carried one leather briefcase.
Lucas recognized her from old photographs Michael had shown him.
Rebecca Shaw.
Alive.
She walked into the terminal.
Torres stepped out.
“Federal agent!”
Rebecca stopped.
She slowly raised her hands.
Then looked past Torres.
Directly at Lucas.
“You look like Rachel said you would.”
Lucas felt his throat tighten.
“You knew my wife.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I owe her my life.”
Lucas walked closer.
“Then tell me who killed her.”
Rebecca's expression darkened.
“I can.”
Lucas stopped.
“Who?”
Rebecca looked at Caroline.
Then Hale.
Then Torres.
Finally Lucas.
“Your brother didn't kill Rachel.”
Lucas stared.
“Daniel was there.”
“Yes.”
“He left her.”
“Yes.”
“But he didn't cause the crash.”
“Who did?”
Rebecca opened the leather briefcase.
Torres immediately moved.
“Slow.”
Rebecca nodded.
She removed a small digital recorder.
Old.
Scratched.
“This was inside Rachel's car.”
Lucas stared.
“Dash recorder?”
“No.”
“Rachel planted it herself.”
Rebecca pressed play.
Static.
Then Rachel's voice.
“I know you're following me.”
A man's voice answered.
Lucas stopped breathing.
He recognized it.
Arthur Wynn.
“Pull over, Rachel.”
“No.”
“You're making this harder.”
“You killed Caroline.”
Arthur laughed.
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
“I know everything.”
A vehicle horn.
Rachel breathing fast.
Then another voice came through a phone speaker inside the car.
Edward Bennett.
Lucas's dead father.
But the recording was dated years after Edward's death.
Lucas stared.
“No.”
Rebecca paused.
Lucas looked at her.
“My father was dead.”
Rebecca nodded.
“The voice was synthetic.”
Lucas remembered Vanessa.
Deepfakes.
Arthur had used Margaret's voice.
He had been doing it for years.
Rebecca continued playback.
The fake Edward voice said:
“Rachel.”
“Give Arthur the evidence.”
Rachel answered:
“You're not Edward.”
Arthur shouted:
“Pull over!”
Tires screamed.
Then Rachel gasped.
Metal crashed.
The recording became chaotic.
Lucas gripped the table.
Then silence.
For twenty seconds.
A car door opened.
Footsteps.
Daniel's voice.
“Oh God.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
Daniel whispered:
“Rachel?”
A weak voice.
Rachel.
“Help me.”
Lucas nearly collapsed.
Hale caught his arm.
The recording continued.
Daniel breathing.
Rachel whispered:
“Please.”
Daniel said:
“I can't.”
Lucas felt tears pouring down his face.
Rachel begged:
“Daniel.”
Daniel started crying.
“If I help you, they kill Lucas.”
Rachel whispered:
“They'll kill him anyway.”
Daniel said nothing.
Then another vehicle arrived.
Arthur's voice.
“Move.”
Daniel whispered:
“I'm sorry.”
Footsteps retreated.
Rachel was still alive.
Arthur opened her door.
Rachel whispered:
“You won't win.”
Arthur laughed.
“I already did.”
The recording ended.
Lucas stared at nothing.
Rachel had been alive.
She had asked for help.
Daniel had walked away.
Arthur had arrived.
Lucas looked at Rebecca.
“What happened after the recording stopped?”
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.”
“What do you mean?”
“The recorder lost power.”
Lucas stepped closer.
“Did Arthur kill her?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I don't think so.”
Everyone froze.
Lucas stared.
“What?”
Rebecca looked directly at him.
“Rachel didn't die at the crash.”
Lucas felt the world stop again.
“No.”
“I saw the hospital transfer records.”
“She survived.”
Lucas couldn't breathe.
“Then where did she die?”
Rebecca's face changed.
“She didn't.”
Lucas stared at her.
May you like
Rebecca whispered:
“Lucas, Rachel Bennett may still be alive.”
