Chapter 10 - Caroline Comes Back

Vanessa couldn't move.

Rain soaked her hair.

Her white bridesmaid robe from the wedding morning still showed beneath the borrowed coat.

She stared at Caroline as though looking at a ghost.

“You're alive.”

Caroline nodded.

Vanessa took one step.

Then another.

Her face collapsed.

“You're alive.”

She ran.

Caroline opened her arms.

The sisters collided.

Vanessa sobbed against her.

Lucas watched.

Even after everything Vanessa had done, the pain in that moment was real.

Richard emerged from the police vehicle farther down the road.

An officer tried to stop him.

He saw Caroline.

Then froze.

“My God.”

Caroline looked toward him.

Her face hardened.

“Dad.”

Richard began crying.

“I thought—”

“No.”

Caroline stepped away from Vanessa.

“You don't get to say you thought anything.”

Richard stopped.

Caroline pointed at Ethan.

“You knew exactly what he was.”

Ethan backed farther toward the trees.

Hale raised his weapon.

“Don't move.”

Ethan laughed nervously.

“Everyone needs to calm down.”

Caroline looked at Lucas.

“Don't let him leave.”

Lucas stared at her.

“You knew Rachel.”

Caroline nodded.

“She saved my life.”

Lucas felt his chest tighten.

“How?”

Caroline looked at Ethan.

“Your father and Ethan tried to kill me.”

Ethan shouted:

“That's not true.”

Caroline ignored him.

“They drugged me after Sophie was born.”

Lucas looked down at Sophie.

She stood beside him.

Confused.

Caroline continued.

“They told everyone I died.”

“They transferred Sophie.”

“They falsified the records.”

“Then they moved me to a private clinic.”

Vanessa stared.

“For seven years?”

Caroline shook her head.

“No.”

“I escaped after nine months.”

Richard looked stunned.

“Why didn't you come home?”

Caroline stared at him.

“Because you helped them.”

Richard whispered:

“I didn't know.”

“You signed the order.”

“What order?”

“The psychiatric commitment.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Caroline's voice broke.

“You told them I was unstable.”

“I had just given birth.”

“I was terrified.”

“And you signed me away.”

Richard began crying.

“I thought you needed treatment.”

“No.”

“You thought Edward Bennett needed you.”

Richard said nothing.

Caroline looked at Lucas.

“Rachel found me.”

“When?”

“Three years before she died.”

Lucas felt his knees weaken.

“Where?”

“Milwaukee.”

“She traced a payment from Horizon Group.”

“She thought it belonged to a former employee.”

“It belonged to the woman sheltering me.”

Lucas whispered:

“Why didn't Rachel tell me?”

Caroline looked toward Sophie.

“Because she loved her.”

Lucas didn't understand.

Caroline continued.

“Rachel had lost her baby.”

“She was grieving.”

“She discovered Sophie wasn't hers biologically.”

“But by then Sophie was already calling her Mommy.”

Lucas looked at his daughter.

Sophie watched quietly.

Caroline's eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted my daughter back.”

Lucas tensed.

Caroline saw it.

“I know.”

She raised one hand.

“I know what that sounds like.”

Vanessa whispered:

“She is your daughter.”

Caroline nodded.

“Yes.”

Lucas felt fear for the first time since the kidnapping ended.

Not fear of violence.

Fear of loss.

Caroline looked at him.

“But Lucas is her father.”

Lucas stared.

Caroline continued.

“Not biologically.”

“Not because of paperwork.”

“Because he raised her.”

Sophie looked up.

“Daddy?”

Lucas crouched immediately.

“Yes.”

“You're still my daddy.”

His eyes burned.

“Yes.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

Lucas held her.

Caroline turned away and cried silently.

Vanessa put one arm around her.

Ethan watched all of them.

Then laughed.

“Touching.”

Hale looked at him.

“Enough.”

Ethan's smile disappeared.

He pointed toward the metal box.

“You have no idea what Caroline did.”

Caroline looked at him.

“Tell them.”

Ethan stared.

“She worked with Rachel.”

“We know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don't.”

“They weren't collecting evidence.”

“They were building a case to destroy both families.”

Lucas stared.

“Good.”

Ethan laughed.

“You think that makes her a hero?”

“Yes.”

Lucas answered without hesitation.

Ethan's face twisted.

“You'll lose everything.”

Lucas looked around.

“My wife is dead.”

“My daughter was kidnapped.”

“My family built lies around me.”

“What exactly do you think I'm protecting?”

Ethan had no answer.

Lucas picked up the flash drive from the box.

“This goes federal.”

Richard whispered:

“Lucas.”

Lucas turned.

Richard looked terrified.

“If you release that, hundreds of people will go down.”

Lucas stared.

“Good.”

“People who weren't involved.”

“Then investigators can separate them.”

“The company could collapse.”

Lucas looked toward Daniel in the police vehicle.

Then at Richard.

Then Vanessa.

“I don't care.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Lucas.”

He turned.

She swallowed.

“I do.”

His face hardened.

She continued.

“Because innocent employees will lose jobs.”

Lucas paused.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Expose everyone who committed crimes.”

“But don't destroy ten thousand people who didn't.”

Lucas stared at her.

For the first time that day, she sounded like the woman he thought he had loved.

Maybe some part of that woman had been real.

He didn't know.

Caroline looked at the flash drive.

“Rachel thought the same thing.”

Lucas turned.

“What?”

“She created two versions.”

“One for investigators.”

“One for the company.”

Lucas frowned.

“The second one shows how to separate legitimate divisions from criminal assets.”

Lucas looked at the box again.

Folders.

One labeled:

CLEAN TRANSITION

Rachel had planned everything.

Even after believing she might die, she had thought about employees she didn't know.

Lucas touched the folder.

He felt tears rise.

“Of course she did.”

Caroline smiled sadly.

“She was stubborn.”

Lucas laughed through grief.

“Yes.”

A gunshot suddenly cracked through the cemetery.

Everyone ducked.

Hale shouted.

“Down!”

Lucas threw himself over Sophie.

Vanessa pulled Caroline behind the headstone.

Another shot.

A tactical officer fell behind a tree.

Not dead.

Hit in the vest.

Chaos erupted.

Hale pointed toward the ridge.

“Shooter!”

Ethan ran.

Lucas saw him sprint toward a service road.

“Hale!”

“I see him!”

Two officers chased.

Ethan disappeared behind a mausoleum.

Then a car engine roared.

Lucas lifted his head.

A black SUV smashed through a side gate.

Ethan climbed inside.

It sped away.

Hale cursed.

“Who the hell was covering him?”

Caroline stared after the vehicle.

Then whispered:

“Arthur.”

Lucas turned.

“Arthur Wynn?”

She nodded.

“He's not just finance.”

“He runs Ethan's security network.”

Lucas stared.

“But Arthur was arrested.”

Caroline's expression changed.

“Then who did you arrest?”

Everyone went still.

Hale immediately grabbed his radio.

“Confirm Arthur Wynn's identity.”

Static.

Then a voice answered.

“Detective.”

“Subject had identification.”

“Run prints.”

A pause.

Then:

“Working.”

Hale looked sick.

Two minutes later, confirmation came.

The man arrested in the warehouse wasn't Arthur Wynn.

He was a private security contractor wearing prosthetic facial pieces.

Lucas stared at the road.

Arthur was still free.

And Ethan had escaped.

Vanessa looked at Caroline.

“Where is Emma?”

Caroline turned toward Ethan's abandoned phone lying in the mud.

The timer was still running.

Twenty-one seconds.

Lucas picked it up.

“Can you stop it?”

Caroline shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Hale grabbed the device.

“Find the van!”

Officers scattered.

Lucas looked at the video background.

Metal wall.

Red stripe.

A tiny sticker.

His mind raced.

He had seen that sticker before.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The van isn't here.”

Hale frowned.

Lucas pointed at the screen.

“That sticker.”

“What?”

“Bennett Fleet Services.”

Hale stared.

Lucas continued.

“Those vans are stored downtown.”

“At the old maintenance garage.”

“How far?”

“Thirty minutes.”

Timer.

Nine seconds.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

The video feed went black.

Vanessa screamed.

Lucas stared at the dead screen.

Then Caroline said something.

“No explosion.”

Hale looked at her.

“What?”

“The microphone stayed live until the screen died.”

“No sound.”

Lucas understood.

“No fire.”

Caroline nodded.

“The timer was fake.”

Hale exhaled.

Then Lucas's phone rang.

Emma's number.

He answered.

“Emma?”

A frightened voice whispered:

“Lucas?”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Listen to me.”

“Tell me what you see.”

Emma breathed quickly.

“Concrete.”

“Red door.”

“Old machines.”

Lucas's heart jumped.

“Maintenance garage.”

“Yes.”

Then Emma whispered:

“Someone's coming.”

“Hide.”

“I can't.”

“Emma.”

A door opened on her end.

Footsteps.

Then a man's voice.

“Give me the phone.”

Lucas recognized it.

Arthur Wynn.

Emma cried.

“Please.”

Arthur spoke into the phone.

“Lucas.”

Lucas clenched his jaw.

“Arthur.”

“Your father would be disappointed.”

“My father is dead.”

“His work isn't.”

Lucas stared into the rain.

“Let Emma go.”

“Bring Caroline.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

Arthur continued.

“Bring the flash drive.”

Lucas's grip tightened.

“And?”

“And Sophie.”

Lucas looked at his daughter.

Arthur laughed softly.

“Every road leads back to that little girl.”

Lucas's voice turned cold.

“Not anymore.”

He ended the call.

Hale stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

Lucas handed him the phone.

“Ending it.”

He looked at Caroline.

“Do you know the garage?”

“Yes.”

“Is there another entrance?”

Caroline nodded.

“An underground utility tunnel.”

Lucas looked at Hale.

“You heard her.”

Hale sighed.

“You really are going to keep doing this.”

Lucas looked at Sophie.

“Until everyone who comes for my daughter is gone.”

Caroline stared at him.

Then smiled faintly.

Rachel had once said almost the same thing.

They left for the garage.

But none of them noticed the small blinking tracker inside the metal evidence box.

And across the city, Ethan Cole watched their route appear on a screen.

May you like

He smiled.

“They're bringing me everything.”
