Chapter 7 - Daniel’s Offer

Lucas stared at the photograph until the image blurred.

Daniel stood behind Sophie.

Not injured.

Not restrained.

Not afraid.

Smiling.

His brother had never been missing.

He had been running the entire operation.

Lucas felt something inside him settle.

The confusion disappeared.

The grief remained.

But the panic transformed into focus.

“What does he want?”

Richard asked.

Lucas looked at him.

“Control.”

Vanessa whispered.

Everyone turned.

She wiped tears from her face.

“That's what this has always been about.”

Lucas stared at her.

“Explain.”

Vanessa took a breath.

“Daniel doesn't want your money.”

“He already has money.”

“He wants Bennett Development.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“He has shares.”

“Not control.”

“He needs my vote.”

“He needed you compromised.”

Lucas frowned.

“How?”

Vanessa looked toward Michael.

“Rachel's evidence.”

Michael nodded slowly.

Lucas understood.

“If the financial crimes become public, the company collapses.”

“Yes.”

“And Daniel wants me to sign control over to him before that happens.”

Vanessa nodded.

“So he can blame everything on you.”

Lucas stared at her.

“You knew this?”

“Not all of it.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

His jaw tightened.

“Enough to marry me.”

Her eyes closed.

“Yes.”

Lucas looked away.

He called his security chief again.

Still no answer.

Then he called a second executive at the company.

Janet Miller.

Chief operating officer.

She answered on the third ring.

“Lucas?”

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Good.”

His voice hardened.

“Do not go into the office.”

“What happened?”

“I need you to do something.”

“Anything.”

“Freeze every executive transfer above fifty thousand dollars.”

Silence.

Then:

“I can't do that without Arthur's approval.”

“Arthur Wynn is compromised.”

Another silence.

“Lucas.”

“I need you to listen.”

“Freeze everything.”

“Lock Daniel out of internal systems.”

“Lock Arthur out.”

“Lock Peter Sloan out.”

“Disable every remote access credential except yours and mine.”

Janet exhaled.

“I can do it for maybe twenty minutes before legal notices.”

“Twenty minutes is enough.”

“What is going on?”

Lucas looked at Daniel's photograph.

“A hostile takeover.”

He ended the call.

Richard stared at him.

“You think shutting down the accounts will help?”

“No.”

Lucas put his phone in his pocket.

“But it'll annoy him.”

Michael laughed quietly.

“Good.”

Lucas turned to Detective Hale.

“I need police tactical support.”

Hale shook his head.

“If Daniel has hostages, we need to coordinate.”

“Coordinate fast.”

“We can't just rush a freight depot.”

Lucas moved closer.

“Then don't.”

Hale frowned.

“What?”

“Let me go in.”

“No.”

“My daughter trusts me.”

“You walk in there, Daniel controls everything.”

Lucas looked at Michael.

“Unless he doesn't get what he expects.”

Michael frowned.

Lucas stared at him.

“They want you.”

“Yes.”

“What if I bring someone who looks like you from a distance?”

Hale's eyes narrowed.

“No.”

Richard whispered:

“He'll see it.”

“Maybe.”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

“What vehicles does Daniel know I have?”

“All of them.”

“What vehicle won't he expect?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“My father's.”

Richard frowned.

“What?”

“The old Lincoln.”

Richard looked at her.

“You mean the armored one?”

Lucas turned.

“Armored?”

Richard nodded.

“I used it when threats were worse.”

Lucas said:

“We're taking it.”

Richard shook his head.

“Daniel knows that car.”

“Good.”

“He'll expect me.”

“No.”

Lucas looked at Richard's clothing.

Then at Michael.

Same approximate height.

Similar build.

Michael realized it.

“You're dressing him like me.”

Richard stared.

“You've lost your mind.”

Lucas looked directly at him.

“My daughter is being held by my brother because of crimes you helped start.”

“So for the next hour, you work for me.”

Richard opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Vanessa almost smiled.

Lucas saw it.

She quickly looked away.

Twenty minutes later, the hospital's private parking level had become an improvised staging point.

Hale had quietly contacted a trusted tactical commander.

No general dispatch.

No radio traffic that could leak.

Lucas didn't trust the department anymore.

Not after what Hale had hidden.

But Hale claimed Daniel had people inside law enforcement.

That explained too much.

Richard changed into Michael's dark jacket.

A baseball cap covered his hair.

From a distance, through tinted glass, he could pass.

Michael remained at the hospital under guard.

Lucas stood beside him.

“If I don't come back—”

Michael cut him off.

“Don't do that.”

“What?”

“Don't start saying final words.”

Lucas stared.

Michael leaned closer.

“Rachel never did.”

Lucas's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“The night before the crash, she called me.”

“She was scared.”

“But she didn't talk like she thought she was going to die.”

“She said she was almost done.”

Lucas swallowed.

“What else?”

“She said she had discovered the worst secret.”

“Worse than the money?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Michael hesitated.

“Something about Sophie.”

Lucas froze.

“What about my daughter?”

“She never told me.”

Lucas grabbed the bedrail.

“Think.”

“I've been thinking for four years.”

“She said one sentence.”

“What sentence?”

Michael looked at him.

“Daniel thinks Sophie is the key.”

Lucas stared.

“The key to what?”

“I don't know.”

Lucas's phone vibrated.

A message from Janet.

ARTHUR ATTEMPTED $18.4M TRANSFER. BLOCKED.

Another.

DANIEL'S CREDENTIALS DISABLED.

Lucas smiled for the first time.

Then his phone rang.

Daniel.

Lucas answered.

“You locked me out.”

His brother's voice was calm.

Lucas replied:

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“You're emotional.”

“You're about to find out how emotional.”

Daniel laughed.

“That temper is why Dad never trusted you.”

Lucas gripped the phone.

“You left Rachel to die.”

Silence.

Just two seconds.

But enough.

Daniel recovered.

“Michael talks too much.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

“So it's true.”

“You don't understand what happened.”

“There it is again.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in this family has that sentence ready.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“Bring Michael.”

“No.”

Daniel's voice hardened.

“Lucas.”

“You don't tell me what to do anymore.”

“Then Sophie stays here.”

Lucas's smile vanished.

“You touch her—”

“I won't.”

“I'm not a monster.”

Lucas almost shouted.

“You locked a six-year-old in a freight depot.”

“That was Vanessa.”

Vanessa flinched beside Lucas.

He looked at her.

Daniel continued.

“She was supposed to keep Sophie away from the wedding.”

“She panicked.”

Lucas stared at Vanessa.

Her face went white.

Daniel laughed.

“She didn't tell you that part?”

Lucas said nothing.

“Ask your bride why she chose the bathroom.”

Lucas turned toward her.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Don't.”

Daniel continued.

“Because Sophie wasn't supposed to be locked in there for five minutes.”

“She was supposed to be there until the ceremony ended.”

Lucas felt rage.

“You told her to do it.”

“I gave her a job.”

“She failed.”

Vanessa shouted toward the phone.

“You threatened her life!”

Daniel laughed.

“And you believed me.”

Vanessa froze.

Richard stared at his daughter.

Daniel continued:

“I never planned to hurt Sophie.”

“I only needed Lucas distracted.”

Lucas frowned.

“From what?”

“His wedding contract.”

Lucas went still.

“What contract?”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“The one Peter slipped into the marriage documents.”

Vanessa's face changed.

Lucas saw it.

“What was in it?”

Daniel answered:

“A trust merger clause.”

Lucas felt cold.

“If Vanessa married you, certain Bennett family assets would merge into a marital holding structure.”

“And if something happened to you within thirty days—”

Vanessa whispered:

“I inherited the voting shares.”

Lucas stared at her.

She began shaking her head.

“I didn't know.”

Daniel laughed.

“She knew.”

“No.”

Vanessa shouted.

“I didn't.”

Lucas stared at her.

Daniel continued.

“You really chose well, little brother.”

Lucas ended the call.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“I swear.”

“Your promises mean nothing.”

She started crying.

Lucas turned away.

Hale approached.

“We're ready.”

Lucas looked at Richard disguised as Michael.

Then at the armored Lincoln.

“Let's go.”

The freight depot sat beside abandoned rail lines.

Dark brick.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal doors.

Lucas's convoy stopped a quarter mile away.

Only the Lincoln continued.

Lucas drove.

Richard sat in the back seat.

Vanessa sat beside him.

Hale had wanted her out.

Lucas insisted she come.

Daniel expected her.

That made her useful.

They reached the depot gate.

It opened automatically.

Lucas drove inside.

One warehouse door rolled upward.

Darkness waited beyond it.

Vanessa whispered:

“Lucas.”

He glanced at her.

“If this goes wrong...”

“Don't.”

She looked at him.

“I am sorry.”

Lucas stared forward.

“Save it for Sophie.”

He drove inside.

The warehouse door shut behind them.

Lights came on.

Daniel stood forty feet away.

Sophie was beside him.

Margaret sat in a chair.

Alive.

Lucas's chest tightened.

Then he saw something else.

Arthur Wynn stood beside Daniel.

Peter Sloan too.

And behind them was a long table.

On it rested a stack of legal documents.

Daniel smiled.

“Right on time.”

Lucas stepped out of the car.

“Let them go.”

Daniel pointed.

“Bring Michael out.”

Richard opened the rear door.

He stepped out slowly.

Cap low.

Head bowed.

Daniel watched.

Then smiled.

“Michael.”

Richard remained silent.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

Lucas saw the movement.

“Wait.”

Daniel paused.

Lucas held up the microSD card.

“You want this?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Yes.”

“Then Sophie first.”

Daniel looked down at her.

Sophie stared at Lucas.

“Daddy.”

Lucas's heart broke.

Daniel rested one hand on her shoulder.

“Sign the papers.”

Lucas looked at the table.

“What are they?”

“Resignation.”

“Transfer of voting control.”

“Indemnification.”

“And a statement accepting responsibility for four years of financial misconduct.”

Lucas laughed.

“You want me to confess to your crimes.”

Daniel shrugged.

“You'll survive.”

“In prison?”

“Maybe.”

“And Sophie?”

“She grows up rich.”

Lucas looked at him.

“You really think that's enough?”

Daniel's smile disappeared.

Lucas continued.

“You don't know anything about being a father.”

For the first time, Daniel's face showed anger.

“Sign.”

Lucas walked toward the table.

Slowly.

Vanessa followed ten feet behind.

Arthur shifted nervously.

Peter held a pen.

Lucas reached the table.

He picked up the first document.

Read nothing.

Then tore it in half.

Daniel stared.

Lucas tore the second.

Then the third.

“Lucas.”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

Lucas dropped the pieces.

“No.”

Daniel looked toward Sophie.

Lucas's entire body tightened.

Then Vanessa screamed:

“Daniel!”

Everyone turned.

She held the burner phone.

On its screen was a live video.

Daniel frowned.

“What is that?”

Vanessa smiled through tears.

“The thing you forgot.”

Lucas looked at her.

She continued:

“The burner has been recording since the hospital.”

Daniel's face changed.

Vanessa held it higher.

“And sending everything to the FBI.”

Arthur stepped back.

Peter went pale.

Daniel stared at her.

“You stupid—”

A loud crash echoed outside.

Then another.

Tactical teams breached the warehouse.

“Police!”

“Hands!”

Chaos erupted.

Arthur ran.

Peter dropped to the floor.

Richard ripped off the baseball cap.

Daniel saw him.

His eyes widened.

“Where is Michael?”

Lucas smiled.

“At the hospital.”

Daniel grabbed Sophie.

Lucas moved.

Everything happened at once.

Sophie twisted away.

Daniel lost his grip.

Margaret kicked the chair backward into his leg.

Lucas crossed the distance.

He grabbed Sophie.

Pulled her into his chest.

Then moved behind a concrete pillar as officers surrounded Daniel.

“Daddy!”

Lucas held her.

“I've got you.”

Sophie cried against his neck.

Margaret was pulled to safety.

Richard raised both hands.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Daniel was forced to the floor.

Lucas thought it was over.

Then Daniel started laughing.

Everyone stopped.

Even Hale looked confused.

Daniel turned his head toward Lucas.

“You think this was about the company?”

Lucas stared.

Daniel smiled.

“Ask Mom.”

Margaret froze.

Lucas slowly looked toward her.

“What?”

Margaret stared at Daniel.

“Don't.”

Daniel laughed.

“There it is.”

Lucas held Sophie tighter.

“Mom?”

Margaret's face had gone completely pale.

Daniel lifted his head.

“Tell him why Rachel made Sophie wear that button.”

Margaret whispered:

“Daniel.”

“Tell him who Sophie's real mother was.”

Lucas felt the warehouse go silent.

He looked down at his daughter.

Then back at his mother.

“What is he talking about?”

May you like

Margaret began crying.

And for the first time in Lucas's life, she couldn't look him in the eye.
