Chapter 9 - The Severed Knot

Two hours later, the storm had finally begun to pass, leaving behind a thick, cool mist over the estate grounds.
The police had taken Victoria away in the back of a squad car, her wrists cuffed behind her back, charged with felony kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, and attempted child endangerment. Julian had been loaded into a separate transport van, his financial ledgers now securely in the hands of federal investigators.
Inside the grand estate’s kitchen, the large stone fireplace crackled with warm, dry birch wood.
Elena sat on the leather sofa wrapped in a thick wool blanket, gently rocking Leo, who had finally fallen asleep after a warm bottle and a dry change of clothes. Her shin was bandaged properly, and the adrenaline that had fueled her for the past twelve hours was finally draining away, leaving her limbs feeling like lead.
Marcus walked in carrying two mugs of black coffee. He set one down on the low table in front of her, then sat in the armchair opposite them, looking at Elena and the baby.
"The district attorney called," Marcus said quietly. "Victoria won't be granted bail. Her father refused to put up the money after I sent him the security footage from the hallway and the boathouse."
Elena kept her eyes on Leo’s sleeping face. "And Julian?"
"Federal wire fraud and corporate espionage. He won't see the outside of a penitentiary for at least a decade." Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You risked your life twice tonight to pull that boy out of the dark."
"I would do it every single day," Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I never wanted your money, Marcus. When Julian forced me to sign those papers, it tore my soul in half. Being in this house, watching him grow... it was the only thing keeping me alive."
Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a fresh, unsealed document stamped with the official seal of the state family court. He placed it gently on the table between them.
"What is this?" Elena asked, her breath catching.
"A petition to vacate the Chicago surrogate surrender," Marcus said, his eyes steady and clear. "And a joint custody agreement naming you as Leo’s legal, biological mother with full parental authority."

Elena stared at the paper, tears welling in her eyes. "Marcus... why would you do this? You have the power to keep him all to yourself. You don't need to share him with anyone."
"Leo doesn't need an empire, Elena," Marcus replied softly, reaching out to gently touch the sleeping boy’s soft cheek. "He needs a mother who would take a bullet for him. And I need someone I can trust to help me raise him right."
