Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Truth

The beam of the flashlight cut through the torrential rain, locking directly onto Julian’s drenched face.

Julian wiped mud from his jaw, raising his hands slowly with a venomous smirk. "Well, look who finally put the pieces together. Tell me, Marcus—did you figure it out when she showed up on your doorstep with forged credentials, or did you just like having your little secret living under your roof?"

"On the ground, Julian. Now," Marcus ordered, his voice cutting through the wind like a razor.

The two private security guards closed the distance, shoving Julian facedown into the wet grass, securing his wrists in heavy zip-ties. Julian thrashed against the mud, shouting over his shoulder, "She played you, Marcus! She came back for the boy! She's going to bleed your trust fund dry!"

Marcus didn't answer him. He gestured to the guards. "Put him in the holding shed by the gatehouse. Confiscate his phone and call the state police. Hand over the wire fraud dossier we compiled last month."

As the guards dragged Julian kicking and cursing into the darkness, Marcus turned his gaze to Elena.

Elena stood frozen beneath the weeping willow, her coat soaked through, the leather ledger clutched tightly against her ribs. Her breath came in shallow, panicked bursts. "You knew," she whispered, the rain streaming down her face. "You knew who I was the day you hired me."

Marcus stepped closer, shutting off the blinding flashlight so only the estate's ambient floodlights illuminated the space between them. "I hired three private intelligence firms before I let you walk through my front door, Elena. I knew the clinic in Chicago was compromised the week after Leo was born. I knew Julian had embezzled the surrogate escrow account."

"Then why let me into your house?" Elena’s voice broke with raw grief. "Why let me stand there as a maid, watching another woman pretend to be his mother?"

"Because Victoria was losing her mind, and I needed someone in that house whose loyalty to that boy was absolute," Marcus said, his jaw tightening. "I couldn't protect him alone while fighting Victoria's family in court. I needed his real mother."

Elena looked down at the mud-caked ground, tears burning hot against her rain-soaked skin. "I gave up my rights because Julian told me Leo would die without the specialized heart surgery only your family's trust could afford. He said if I ever came near you, he'd take the money back."

"Julian lied," Marcus said, stepping close enough that Elena could see the deep sorrow etched into his features. "The trust was funded by me, not him. Leo’s surgery was paid for in full before you even left the recovery room."

Before Elena could process the revelation, Marcus’s radio crackled loudly from his chest pocket.

A panicked voice broke through the static: "Mr. Vance! Security breach at the north wing! The nursery alarm just went off—someone bypassed the window locks!"

Elena’s heart shattered in her chest. "Leo!"
