Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ambush

The rain poured in blinding sheets as Elena reached the edge of the sprawling estate. She kept low, staying inside the shadow line cast by the dense oak trees bordering the south perimeter wall.
Up ahead, through the mist and the downpour, a set of dim headlights flickered twice near the rusted maintenance gate.
Elena approached cautiously, her hand clutching the ledger through her coat pocket. The driver’s side window of the idling SUV rolled down three inches, exposing a plume of cigarette smoke and a familiar, sneering profile.
It wasn't Victoria.
It was Julian Vance—Marcus’s estranged younger brother and the black sheep of the Vance dynasty.
"You're late, sweetheart," Julian said, his voice raspy over the drum of the rain on the car roof.
"I came because you threatened me," Elena said, refusing to step closer than five feet. "How do you know about Chicago?"
Julian chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "Because I was the one who paid off the clinic director to falsify the birth certificate in the first place. Victoria couldn't carry a child, Marcus needed an heir to secure his grandfather's trust fund, and you... well, you were just a desperate twenty-year-old girl with zero family and mounting medical bills."
Elena’s vision blurred with rage. "You swore my identity would be sealed forever. You swore Marcus would never find out."
"That was the deal," Julian said, flicking his cigarette butt into the mud. "Until Marcus pushed me off the board of directors and cut off my trust. Now, that little ledger in your pocket is worth fifty million dollars. Hand it over, and I won't tell Marcus that his beloved nanny is actually his son's biological mother."
Elena took a step back, shaking her head. "If you take this to the press, they'll tear Leo apart. Victoria will use this to take him away from everyone."
"I don't give a damn about the kid," Julian snapped, suddenly kicking his car door open and stepping out into the rain. He was tall, wiry, and fast. "Give me the book, Elena!"
Elena turned and bolted back toward the estate trees, but her injured leg betrayed her. Her foot slipped in the slick mud, and she crashed down onto her hands and knees.
Julian was on her in an instant. He grabbed the hood of her jacket, yanking her backward, his fingers clawing at her inner pocket. "You thought you could play games with this family?!"
"Get off me!" Elena screamed, twisting around and driving her elbow directly into Julian’s throat.
Julian gagged, stumbling backward into the mud. Elena scrambled to her feet, clutching the ledger to her chest, but before she could run, a pair of blinding high-beam headlights illuminated the entire clearing.
A massive black pickup truck tore through the lawn, sliding to a violent halt ten feet away.
The door flew open.
Marcus stepped out into the pouring rain, holding a heavy tactical flashlight. Behind him, two armed security officers stepped out of the shadows, their weapons drawn and aimed straight at Julian.
Marcus walked forward, the beam of his flashlight cutting through the downpour until it rested directly on the ledger clutched in Elena’s trembling hands.
"Julian," Marcus said, his voice colder than the storm around them. "Step away from my wife's surrogate."

Elena froze, staring at Marcus in complete shock.
Marcus had known the whole time.
