Chapter 15 - The Bloodline Sealed

The lead contractor raised his weapon, lining the sights with Elena’s forehead.

Elena didn't wait to be executed.

She lunged forward with all the explosive force in her body, grabbing the barrel of the suppressed weapon and driving the heel of her palm straight into the guard's windpipe. The man gagged, stumbling backward as the pistol fired harmlessly into the ceiling plaster.

Elena twisted the weapon from his grip, sweeping his legs with a brutal kick she had learned surviving the streets of Detroit. The second contractor raised his rifle, but before he could squeeze the trigger, the nursery door flew off its hinges.

Marcus burst into the room covered in soot and blood, firing two lethal double-taps. Both contractors collapsed to the floor, neutralized instantly.

Without missing a beat, Marcus and Elena tore through the shattered terrace doors into the roaring downdraft of the helicopter hovering fifty feet above the estate's private lawn.

Madeline was twenty yards away, running toward the lowered landing skids with Leo in her arms.

"Madeline! Drop the child!" Marcus roared, his voice cutting through the roar of the rotor blades.

Madeline reached the edge of the terrace railing, realizing she was trapped between Marcus’s gun and the twenty-foot drop to the stone patio below. The helicopter couldn't land through the storm winds without clearing the perimeter trees.

"If I go down, Marcus, this entire bloodline goes down with me!" Madeline shrieked, backing against the wrought-iron railing, tilting Leo precariously over the edge.

"Don't do it!" Elena screamed, dropping to her knees on the wet stone, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "Take the money! Take the trust! Take every single dollar the Vance family owns! Just give me my baby!"

Madeline sneered, her eyes gleaming with absolute, narcissistic madness. "A Vance never surrenders to a common whore."

She loosened her grip on the carrier straps, preparing to drop the child into the darkness.

BANG.

A single shot echoed from the lawn below.

Madeline gasped, her eyes widening in total disbelief as a red blossom bloomed across her shoulder. Her grip failed, and she tumbled backward over the railing, plummeting into the manicured hedges below.

Elena moved faster than thought.

She threw her body over the edge of the stone balcony, catching the reinforced nylon strap of Leo’s carrier with one raw, bleeding hand just as it slipped into the open air.

With a scream of sheer maternal fury, Elena pulled with every ounce of strength left in her body, dragging the crying infant over the stone ledge and slamming him hard against her chest.

Marcus was beside her in a fraction of a second, wrapping his massive arms around both of them, pulling them away from the edge onto the safe, solid stone of the terrace.

Down on the lawn, the estate's head of security lowered his sniper rifle, securing the perimeter as state police squad cars finally swarmed the front gates, their red and blue lights flooding the estate grounds.

Leo’s frantic wailing filled the cool night air. Elena buried her face into his soft hair, rocking him violently as pure, unadulterated sobs wracked her body. "I have you. I've got you, baby. You're safe. Mama's here."

Marcus knelt beside them, his hand resting gently against the back of Elena’s neck, his forehead touching hers. "It's over, Elena. They will never touch him again."

One Month Later

The warm August sun poured through the high arched windows of the Cook County Probate Court.

Judge Alvarez brought her wooden gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"By order of this court, the fraudulent surrogate contract dated May 14th is hereby vacated and expunged from all state records," Judge Alvarez declared, looking down from the bench with a warm, genuine smile. "Full legal, biological, and physical custody of Leo Marcus Vance is permanently awarded jointly to his biological father, Marcus Vance, and his biological mother, Elena Vance."

Elena looked down at the gold wedding band resting on her left ring finger, then up at Marcus, whose eyes were filled with an unshakeable peace she had never seen before.

Madeline and Victoria were both locked inside federal maximum-security facilities awaiting trial for racketeering, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder. The Vance empire had been purged of every toxic shadow, restructured into an untouchable trust dedicated entirely to Leo's future.

Marcus leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to Elena’s lips before turning to lift eight-month-old Leo into the air. The little boy laughed joyfully, his bright blue eyes catching the afternoon sunlight.

Elena hooked her arm through Marcus’s, stepping out of the courtroom into the bright, open streets of Chicago.

The nightmare was finished. The lies were dead.

And for the first time in their lives, they were finally a family.
