Chapter 12 - Blood in the Trust

The mahogany-paneled chambers felt tighter than a prison cell.
Judge Maria Alvarez sat behind her massive desk, adjusting her reading glasses as she flipped through the thick appellate stay Madeline Hayes’s high-powered legal team had just delivered.
"Your Honor, this petition is an absolute farce," Arthur Sterling argued, slamming his palms flat against the judge's mahogany desk. "Madeline Hayes hasn't set foot in the United States in four years. She resides permanently in Switzerland to evade corporate tax liabilities. She is using an emergency jurisdictional loophole to delay the lawful transfer of biological custody to Elena!"
"I am the maternal grandmother of record on that boy's legal birth certificate, Your Honor," Madeline said, her voice smooth as silk from the opposite chair. "Miss Vance—or whatever alias she is currently using—signed away all maternal rights for monetary compensation in a private Chicago clinic. Whether my daughter committed a crime or not does not instantly restore the legal rights of an unlicensed surrogate."
Elena stood behind Marcus, her knuckles white where she gripped the stroller's handle. She leaned forward, her voice cutting through the stuffy room with raw, furious conviction.
"I didn't give him up for money, Mrs. Hayes. Your daughter and Julian withheld his medical care until I surrendered him. I took a bullet graze and a boot to the ribs to keep Leo from being stolen by your daughter. You weren't there when he was crying in the dark. You were on a yacht in Monaco!"
"Order in my chambers!" Judge Alvarez snapped, bringing her hand down hard.
The room fell dead silent, save for Leo's soft breathing in the corner.
Alvarez looked between Marcus's stony face, Elena's defiant eyes, and Madeline's smug smirk. She sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose with visible exhaustion.
"Mrs. Hayes's emergency appellate stay is legally binding for forty-eight hours," Judge Alvarez stated firmly. "I cannot sign the biological restoration until the appellate division clears the jurisdictional challenge regarding the surrogate contract."
Madeline’s lips curved into a triumphant grin. "Then bailiffs, please take custody of the minor child—"
"I didn't say that, Mrs. Hayes," Alvarez cut her off sharply. "The minor child remains in the physical custody of his biological father, Marcus Vance, under court-supervised house arrest at the Vance estate. Neither Miss Elena nor Mrs. Hayes may remove the child from Cook County under penalty of immediate felony contempt. We reconvene on Friday morning at nine sharp. If the appellate stay is upheld, the child goes into state foster custody pending trial."
Madeline’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "A temporary reprieve, Marcus. Forty-eight hours is more than enough time to buy every judge on the appellate circuit."

She turned on her heel and strode out of chambers, her heels clicking aggressively down the marble floor.
Marcus turned to Elena, his eyes dark with resolve. "Pack Leo’s essentials. We’re going back to the estate, and we aren't leaving until we burn Madeline's foundation to the ground."
