Chapter 6 - The Emergency Board Meeting

At 8:45 AM, the boardroom on the 42nd floor of Vance Tower was an absolute war zone.

Julian sat at the head of the table, dark purple rings under his eyes, his designer tie loosened, sweating profusely. Evelyn was pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, her manicured nails biting into her palms.

"Where is she?!" Evelyn hissed. "Julian, find that ungrateful little leech and offer her whatever she wants! The overseas clients are threatening breach of contract lawsuits! We are losing two hundred thousand dollars every thirty minutes!"

"I've left twenty voicemails!" Julian yelled back, slamming his fist onto the glass table. "Her phone is rejecting all my calls! Her old apartment is empty, and her sister's house is guarded by private security!"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Arthur Vance walked in. At sixty-five, the family patriarch was lean, sharp-eyed, and utterly ruthless. Behind him walked four corporate litigators carrying thick leather binders.

"Dad," Julian stood up, trying to fix his posture. "Look, this is just a minor technical glitch with the software update—"

Arthur didn't say a word. He walked up to Julian and slapped him across the face with a loud, ringing crack that echoed through the entire room.

"You idiot," Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. "You total, incompetent fool."

"Arthur!" Evelyn shrieked, rushing forward. "How dare you strike our son! This is all that peasant girl's fault! She stole Julian's software!"

Arthur turned his piercing gaze toward his ex-wife. "Shut up, Evelyn. I just spent two hours with the lead developers at MIT. Julian didn't write a single line of that software. Emma holds the patent, the copyright, and the proprietary runtime compiler. She didn't steal anything—she built this company while your worthless son spent her equity on sports cars and private jets."

Arthur threw a tablet onto the table. On the screen was the viral video from the dinner party, now sitting at 4.2 million views on social media after an anonymous leak.

Julian’s face went pasty white. "Who leaked that?"

"It doesn't matter," a clear, melodic voice spoke from the doorway.

Julian, Evelyn, and Arthur all spun around.

Emma walked in, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit, her posture immaculate, flanked by Marcus Cole.

"Emma!" Julian breathed out, stepping forward with fake relief. "Emma, thank God. Look, we can fix this. We're husband and wife—"

Emma held up a single hand, stopping him dead in his tracks.

"I am not your wife anymore, Julian. I am your company's primary creditor."
