Chapter 3 - The Spare Key

The lock clicked. The door swung open, revealing Julian holding a gold master key, his face contorted in vicious triumph.
"You really thought you could lock me out of my own bedroom?" Julian stepped inside, blocking the exit with his wide frame. "Put the bag down, Emma. You aren't going anywhere until you walk downstairs, apologize to my mother, and clean up the dining room floor."
"Step aside, Julian."
"Or what?" Julian laughed, crossing his arms. "You going to hit me? Go ahead. Try it. I'll have you thrown in a cell so fast your head will spin. My family owns the precinct captain in this district."
Emma looked at him—really looked at him. She remembered the charming, attentive man who had pursued her two years ago, showering her with promises of partnership and shared ambition. It had all been bait. Once the ring was on her finger, the cage had snapped shut.
"You think your money makes you untouchable," Emma said, her voice steady and eerily quiet.
"In this town? It does." Julian took a menacing step forward, reaching for her duffel strap. "Now drop the bag."
Emma didn't flinch. Instead, she lifted her left hand, which held her phone, and tapped the screen once.
A high-pitched chime sounded through the house's integrated smart audio system. Julian frowned, pausing.
From the hallway speakers, Evelyn’s voice rang out crystal clear: "Eat up, Emma! Since you clearly don't know how to season a simple vinaigrette, maybe your face will absorb the flavor!" Followed immediately by the sickening crack of the bowl and Julian’s loud, mocking laughter: "Look at her! Mom, you're savage!"
Julian’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "What did you do?"
"That video just uploaded to a secure off-site server," Emma said, stepping right into his space. "Every board member at Sterling Capital has a notification waiting in their inbox right now. Move out of my way, Julian, or the next broadcast goes directly to the local press."

Julian’s throat bobbed. He took a hesitant step back.
Emma walked past him into the hallway, but as she reached the top of the stairs, Evelyn was waiting at the bottom, holding a heavy marble decanter.
