Chapter 12 - The Reckoning of Julian

Inside the private client lounge of First National Bank, Julian slammed his briefcase onto the banker's mahogany desk.
"What do you mean the funds are unavailable?!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking. "I am a Tier-One Diamond account holder! I want five hundred thousand dollars in bearer bonds and cash right now!"
The branch manager, an elderly man who had catered to Julian’s every whim for years, looked at him with cold professionalism.
"I apologize, Mr. Vance. As of 11:00 AM, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Trade Commission placed a freeze on all assets associated with Vance Capital and your personal accounts."
"On what grounds?!"
"Whistleblower documentation regarding systematic tax evasion, offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands, and fraudulent reporting of corporate software assets," the manager said, pushing a formal federal subpoena across the desk.
Julian’s breath hitched. The shell accounts.
Only two people in the world knew about those accounts. Julian... and Emma, who had discovered the encrypted ledger when she repaired his laptop eight months ago.
Julian stumbled backward out of the bank lounge and into the blistering afternoon sun. He pulled out his phone to call his father, but Arthur’s number was completely disconnected.
A sleek town car pulled up to the curb. The rear window rolled down slowly.
Emma sat inside, looking radiant, self-assured, and entirely beyond his reach.
Julian rushed to the car window, gripping the door frame with white knuckles. "Emma! Emma, you gave them the Caymans ledger?! That’s a federal crime! They’re going to send me to a penitentiary!"
"You committed the crime, Julian. I just forwarded the paperwork to the people who care," Emma replied, her voice smooth and devoid of anger. "You spent two years telling me I was worthless without you. You said I would starve if I ever left your house."
"I was wrong! I'm sorry! I'll do anything!" Julian dropped to his knees on the public sidewalk, sobbing openly in front of dozens of pedestrians. "Please, Emma... don't destroy me!"
Emma looked down at the man who had cheered while her face was pushed into broken glass.
May you like
"You destroyed yourself, Julian. I just stopped shielding you from the consequences."
Emma tapped the glass. The driver accelerated smoothly into traffic, leaving Julian kneeling in the dirt, weeping as two federal agents in dark suits approached him with open badges.
