Chapter 10 - Desperation in the Lobby

Emma took the private elevator down to the ground floor.
When the glass doors parted, she saw a crowd of employees and building tenants gathered around the grand marble fountain. In the center stood Evelyn Vance, looking entirely unhinged.
Her immaculate designer coat was rumpled, her hair was flying wildly out of its usual salon blowout, and she held a glass jar filled with amber liquid and a vintage gold lighter.
"Call the police, and I flick this lighter!" Evelyn screamed at the building security team, who were holding their hands up, trying to calm her.
"Evelyn," Emma called out, her voice calm and ringing clearly across the quiet lobby.
The crowd parted instantly. Emma walked toward her former mother-in-law without a hint of fear.
"You devil!" Evelyn shrieked, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Emma. "You ruined my family! Julian’s bank accounts are frozen! The country club just revoked my membership because the board saw that video! My friends are blocking my calls!"
"You did that to yourself the moment you treated human beings like garbage, Evelyn," Emma said, stopping five feet away.
"I gave you a home! I allowed you to marry my son!" Evelyn screamed, her eyes wild. "You were a nobody from the Midwest! You owe us everything! Sign the company back to Julian, or I swear to God I will burn this entire building down with both of us inside!"
Emma looked down at the jar in Evelyn's hand, then looked back into the woman’s crazed eyes.
"That's apple juice, Evelyn."
Evelyn froze. "What?"
"You're a narcissist, Evelyn. You love your own comfort, your social status, and your skin far too much to ever harm a single hair on your head," Emma said, stepping directly into Evelyn's reach. "You bought that jar at the organic cafe across the street ten minutes ago. You staged this entire tantrum hoping someone would film it and paint you as the tragic victim of an ungrateful daughter-in-law."
May you like
Emma pointed up at the lobby's 360-degree security cameras.
"The police are already outside, Evelyn. And this time, there is no Arthur Vance to bail you out."
