Chapter 9 - The Daughter Who Became the Key

Lily held the pistol with both hands.

Her arms trembled beneath its weight.

But her eyes remained empty.

Ethan froze.

“Lily.”

She raised the gun toward Daniel.

Naomi reached slowly toward her.

“Sweetheart, give me the weapon.”

Lily turned the barrel toward Naomi.

Ethan stepped between them.

“No one move.”

Daniel watched from the bed.

He showed no fear.

No surprise.

Only satisfaction.

Ethan looked at him.

“What did you do to her?”

Daniel swung his legs to the floor.

“The same thing your family did to hundreds of children.”

“You conditioned her.”

“I prepared her.”

“She is nine years old.”

“She is the only person Charles would never suspect.”

Lily’s finger moved toward the trigger.

Ethan lowered himself in front of her.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes did not focus.

He reached for the gun.

She stepped back.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Do not touch her.”

Ethan turned.

“You do not command anyone anymore.”

Daniel smiled.

“I command more people than you understand.”

Vale lay bleeding near the bed.

He tried to push himself up.

“Daniel.”

The old man looked down at him.

“You should have stayed loyal.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You kept me sedated.”

“To protect everyone.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Everyone except Elena.”

Ethan glanced toward the monitor.

Elena remained in the foyer.

She had rolled from the stretcher.

Marcus stood several feet away, speaking into a phone.

Charles remained on the staircase.

Victor’s body lay on the marble.

The next timer showed two minutes and forty seconds.

Ethan looked back at Daniel.

“Stop Marcus.”

Daniel adjusted the sleeve of his hospital gown.

“Marcus is useful.”

“He killed Victor.”

“Victor outlived his usefulness.”

Lily’s hands tightened around the pistol.

Ethan saw tears gathering in her empty eyes.

Some part of her was still inside.

Fighting.

“Sweetheart.”

He kept his voice gentle.

“Remember the beach.”

No reaction.

“You sat on my shoulders.”

Her eyes flickered.

“Mommy held your hand.”

Daniel’s smile faded slightly.

“You laughed when the waves touched my shoes.”

Lily blinked.

Ethan continued.

“You said the ocean was chasing us.”

Her lips parted.

“Daddy?”

The gun lowered half an inch.

Daniel spoke sharply.

“Where the lion wakes.”

Lily’s eyes emptied again.

She raised the weapon.

Ethan lunged.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

He wrapped his hands around hers.

Lily screamed and fought him with surprising strength.

Naomi took the weapon.

Ethan pulled his daughter against his chest.

She struck him.

Kicked him.

Bit his shoulder.

He held on.

“You are safe.”

“Let me go!”

“You are safe.”

“Grandpa said I have to finish!”

“You do not have to do anything.”

She began sobbing.

Her body slowly weakened.

Ethan looked at Daniel over her head.

“I will kill you.”

Daniel remained calm.

“No.”

“You will need me.”

“For what?”

“The people Marcus is about to activate.”

Naomi looked toward the photographs.

“You said hundreds survived.”

Daniel nodded.

“Some became influential.”

“Some became violent.”

“Some became both.”

Vale pressed one hand against his wound.

“You built an army.”

Daniel looked almost offended.

“I built insurance.”

Ethan held Lily tighter.

“Against whom?”

“The Whitmores.”

Charles’s voice came through the room speaker.

“You built it for yourself.”

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“Charles.”

On the monitor, Charles lifted his head.

His face was gray.

“You were always dramatic.”

Daniel stood.

He moved slowly, but not like a sick man.

The weakness had been another performance.

Charles stared at him through the camera.

“Elena trusted you.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Elena was a child.”

“She was thirty-two when she entered the program.”

“She was still my child.”

“You used her.”

“To expose you.”

“You married her to my son.”

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

“I introduced opportunity.”

Ethan felt the words like poison.

“You sent Elena to me.”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever love me?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Eventually.”

The answer hurt because Ethan believed it.

Elena’s love had been real.

But its beginning had been designed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“She tried to leave the investigation after Lily was born.”

“Why didn’t you let her?”

“Because Charles discovered what she had stolen.”

Charles spoke through the monitor.

“She stole names that would have started wars.”

Daniel smiled.

“They belonged in daylight.”

“She hid them.”

“To protect Ethan.”

Ethan looked toward his father’s image.

“You knew Elena was investigating.”

Charles nodded.

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I hoped she would stop.”

“You let me marry a woman you thought was using me.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“I saw the way she looked at you.”

“And that excused everything?”

“No.”

Daniel walked toward the control panel beside the bed.

Vale grabbed his ankle.

“Do not.”

Daniel kicked him away.

Lily cried against Ethan’s chest.

“Mommy.”

Ethan looked at the monitor.

Elena had pushed herself onto her knees.

Marcus turned toward her.

She grabbed a broken piece of glass from the marble floor.

Marcus did not see it.

The timer reached one minute.

Ethan pressed the microphone button.

“Elena.”

Marcus looked toward the nearest camera.

Elena froze.

“Ethan?” she whispered.

“I’m here.”

Her eyes searched the foyer.

“Lily?”

“She is with me.”

Elena began crying.

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

Daniel touched the control panel.

Lily’s body stiffened again.

Ethan felt it.

He turned.

“Step away from that machine.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You have forty seconds before Marcus kills Charles.”

“Why should I care?”

Charles heard the question through the speakers.

He did not react.

Daniel smiled.

“Because Charles is the only person who can reverse Lily’s conditioning.”

Ethan looked toward his father.

Charles shook his head.

“He is lying.”

Daniel pressed another key.

Lily screamed.

She clutched both sides of her head.

“Make it stop!”

Ethan laid her on the floor.

“What are you doing?”

Daniel watched the monitor.

“Activating the second layer.”

Lily began repeating words Ethan did not understand.

Numbers.

Names.

Addresses.

Naomi stared at her.

“She is reciting data.”

Daniel nodded.

“The archive was transferred gradually.”

Ethan felt horror spread through him.

“You stored it inside her.”

“Only the final index.”

“She is a child.”

“She is protected by innocence.”

Ethan rushed Daniel.

The old man pressed a switch.

The steel restraints rose from the sides of the bed and snapped around Ethan’s wrists.

He was pulled backward against the frame.

Naomi raised her weapon.

Daniel lifted a small remote.

“Shoot me, and Lily never wakes normally again.”

Naomi kept the gun trained on him.

Vale crawled toward the shattered vial.

Daniel noticed.

He stepped on Vale’s hand.

The doctor cried out.

“You spent three years weakening Elena’s memory.”

Daniel leaned down.

“And you still failed.”

Vale looked at Ethan.

“I did not erase her memories.”

“What did you do?”

“I hid them.”

“Where?”

Vale’s eyes moved toward Lily.

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

Daniel smiled.

“Elena’s memories were used to build the final index.”

Ethan pulled against the restraints.

“Inside our daughter?”

“Only fragments.”

Daniel looked toward Lily with clinical fascination.

“Places.”

“Faces.”

“Commands.”

“She is not an archive.”

“She is the only archive Marcus cannot steal without destroying.”

On the foyer monitor, Marcus grabbed Elena by the hair.

He dragged her toward Charles.

The timer reached ten seconds.

Marcus raised the pistol.

Ethan shouted into the microphone.

“Marcus!”

Marcus looked toward the camera.

“I have the card.”

Ethan lifted his bound hand.

The black memory card remained between his fingers.

Marcus paused.

“Bring it to the foyer.”

“Release Elena.”

“Bring it first.”

Daniel looked amused.

“You still think the card matters.”

Ethan ignored him.

“I will give it to you.”

Marcus pressed the gun against Charles’s forehead.

“You have one minute.”

The timer reset.

Ethan looked at Naomi.

Then at Vale.

Then at Lily.

There was no way to reach the foyer before the minute ended.

Unless Daniel opened the passage.

Ethan looked at him.

“You want Charles alive.”

Daniel smiled.

“I want him conscious when his empire dies.”

“Then release me.”

“No.”

“You need the card.”

“I need Lily.”

Ethan understood.

Daniel had never planned to leave with documents.

He planned to leave with his granddaughter.

He had transformed her into the final weapon against the Crown.

“You are not taking her.”

Daniel looked toward the chamber door.

“I already have.”

A warning light turned green.

The door opened.

Six armed men stood in the corridor.

Ethan recognized one.

A deputy who had arrived with Sheriff Price.

Another was one of Victor’s former security guards.

A third wore the uniform of Whitmore Biomedical.

Survivors.

Subjects.

People waiting for Daniel’s voice.

Daniel spoke one sentence.

“The thorn has opened.”

Every man raised his weapon.

Naomi slowly lowered hers.

Vale closed his eyes.

Ethan looked down at Lily.

She stared up at Daniel.

Then she whispered the next line of the poem.

“The lion takes the child home.”

Daniel smiled.

Ethan pulled against the restraints until metal cut into his wrists.

“No!”

Two men lifted Lily.

She did not resist.

Daniel walked toward the door.

Ethan shouted her name.

For one moment, Lily looked back.

Her eyes cleared.

“Daddy?”

Daniel touched the back of her neck.

Her face emptied again.

The men carried her into the corridor.

Daniel followed.

Before leaving, he turned toward Ethan.

“Elena was never beneath the floor because Victor imprisoned her.”

Ethan stopped struggling.

Daniel smiled.

“She stayed because she knew what Lily had become.”

The door began to close.

Ethan stared at him.

“What did she become?”

May you like

Daniel’s final words reached him through the narrowing gap.

“The reason every member of the Crown will kill to possess her.”
