Chapter 12 - The Mother’s Final Command

Lily pulled against the restraints.

The metal frame shook beneath her.

Ethan held both sides of her face.

“Look at me.”

Her eyes moved toward Charles.

The overturned wheelchair lay beneath the broken stained-glass window.

Victor shielded his father with his own body.

Blood darkened Charles’s shoulder.

One of Daniel’s men advanced toward them.

Price fired his final round.

The man fell beside the pews.

Two others continued shooting.

Naomi crouched behind the altar.

Her pistol clicked empty.

Daniel struck commands into the machine.

The system rejected every one.

ACCESS DENIED.

Lily whispered again.

“Destroy the Crown.”

Ethan pulled her face toward him.

“You are Lily Cole.”

Her expression did not change.

“You are nine years old.”

Her arms strained against the restraints.

“You love strawberry ice cream.”

A flicker moved through her eyes.

“You hate peas.”

Her lips trembled.

“You sleep with a stuffed rabbit named Captain.”

“Captain Blue,” she whispered.

Ethan felt hope.

“Yes.”

“His ear is torn.”

“Mommy fixed it.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

Then the chapel speakers repeated the command.

Destroy the Crown.

Her face emptied again.

Daniel rushed toward the red door.

Inside the hidden archive, servers glowed beneath the floor.

Old film reels lined the walls.

Shelves held files sealed in black boxes.

He pulled a cable from the central panel.

The recording of Isabel flickered.

Then returned.

Daniel pulled another cable.

Nothing stopped.

Charles called from across the chapel.

“You cannot disable her system.”

Daniel looked toward him.

“You told me the archive was incomplete.”

“I lied.”

Daniel laughed.

Gunfire cracked above him.

“You always lie when you are afraid.”

Charles pushed Victor aside.

“Isabel never trusted you.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“She was my sister.”

“She feared you more than me.”

“That is not true.”

Charles pointed toward Lily.

“She hid the reversal inside the child.”

Ethan turned.

“What reversal?”

Charles struggled to sit upright.

“Isabel never built a command without an escape.”

“Where is it?”

“In the recording.”

Daniel looked toward the projection.

Isabel continued speaking.

“The Crown taught us that memory could be controlled through pain.”

“But pain is not the strongest anchor.”

Daniel stared at the image.

The armed men stopped moving.

For one second, every conditioned person in the room listened.

Isabel looked into the camera.

“Love is stronger.”

Ethan held Lily’s face.

Her tears ran across his fingers.

“The program can bury names.”

“It can bury places.”

“It can bury identity.”

“But it cannot erase the first person who made you feel safe.”

The chapel became strangely quiet.

Even the gunfire stopped.

Isabel’s voice softened.

“To my children, remember the song I sang before the Crown taught you fear.”

A melody began playing.

Simple.

Slow.

Elena lifted her head.

She knew it.

Daniel knew it too.

His face collapsed.

“No.”

Elena began singing.

Her voice was weak.

But clear.

“Sleep beneath the silver moon.”

“The morning finds the lost one soon.”

Lily blinked.

Ethan continued with Elena.

“Hold my hand and close your eyes.”

“Love will lead you through the lies.”

The metal band around Lily’s head loosened.

Daniel rushed toward the machine.

“No!”

Marcus intercepted him.

They crashed against the altar.

Daniel struck Marcus across the face.

Marcus drove him into the stone rail.

Elena crawled toward Lily.

She placed one hand over Ethan’s.

Together, they held their daughter.

Elena sang again.

“Sleep beneath the silver moon.”

Lily’s breathing slowed.

“The morning finds the lost one soon.”

Her eyes focused.

“Mommy?”

Elena broke into tears.

“Yes.”

“You’re here.”

“I’m here.”

The conditioned men lowered their rifles.

One collapsed to his knees.

Another began crying.

A third stared at his own hands as though seeing them for the first time.

The phrase from the speakers faded.

Destroy the Crown.

The command had lost its hold.

Ethan released the metal band.

This time, it opened.

He lifted Lily from the machine.

She wrapped herself around both parents.

For a moment, nothing else existed.

Not the Crown.

Not the archive.

Not the bloodline.

Only the three of them.

Then Victor shouted.

“Charles!”

Ethan looked across the chapel.

His father lay beneath the overturned wheelchair.

Blood spread through his shirt.

Victor pressed both hands against the wound.

Charles’s face had gone white.

Daniel pushed Marcus away.

He ran toward the red archive.

Marcus caught his ankle.

Daniel fell.

The two men fought on the chapel floor.

Price tried to stand.

His injured arm hung uselessly.

Naomi reached for a fallen rifle.

One of Daniel’s men grabbed it first.

Naomi froze.

The man looked at her.

His eyes were no longer empty.

He turned the weapon around and handed it to her.

“I’m sorry.”

Naomi took it.

Marcus struck Daniel with the remote detonator.

Daniel rolled onto his back.

Blood ran from his mouth.

“You think this is over?”

Marcus stood above him.

“You used me from the day I was born.”

Daniel laughed.

“Victor abandoned you.”

“You put me in the program.”

“I made you capable.”

“You made me empty.”

Daniel reached toward his coat.

Marcus kicked his hand away.

A small glass trigger slid across the floor.

Charles saw it.

His eyes widened.

“The archive.”

Ethan followed his gaze.

Red liquid moved inside the trigger.

A pressure switch blinked at its center.

Naomi aimed the rifle at Daniel.

“What does it activate?”

Daniel smiled through the blood.

“The truth.”

Marcus grabbed the device.

Charles shouted.

“Do not touch it!”

Marcus looked toward him.

“You spent your life hiding from this.”

“It is not a release.”

“What is it?”

Charles tried to lift himself.

“A thermite charge.”

The room went still.

Daniel smiled.

“If I cannot control the archive, no one will.”

Ethan looked inside the red chamber.

The servers.

The files.

The recordings.

Proof of every crime.

Proof of Elena’s imprisonment.

Proof of Lily’s conditioning.

Proof that hundreds of victims existed.

“How long?” Ethan asked.

Charles looked at the blinking device.

“Five minutes after activation.”

Marcus turned it over.

The switch had already been pressed.

A timer appeared beneath the glass.

FOUR MINUTES, TWELVE SECONDS.

Naomi swore.

Price looked toward the chapel doors.

“We evacuate.”

Ethan shook his head.

“We need the evidence.”

“The room is about to burn.”

“There are victims whose lives depend on those files.”

Elena held Lily close.

“We cannot carry everything.”

Charles pointed toward the central server.

“The original archive can be separated.”

“How?”

“Inside the red chamber.”

Daniel laughed.

“It requires two blood authorizations.”

Ethan looked toward Charles.

“Yours and mine?”

“No.”

Charles’s eyes moved toward Elena.

“Brother and sister.”

Silence fell again.

Elena stared at Ethan.

The truth between them became unbearable.

They shared a mother.

The archive had been designed to require both branches of Isabel’s bloodline.

Daniel smiled.

“Isabel wanted her children to decide together.”

Ethan looked at Elena.

She looked back.

Grief passed between them.

Their marriage.

Their memories.

Their daughter.

Every beautiful thing now carried a truth neither of them had chosen.

The timer reached three minutes and thirty seconds.

Ethan handed Lily to Naomi.

“Take her outside.”

Lily clung to him.

“No.”

“Sweetheart.”

“You promised you wouldn’t lose Mommy again.”

Ethan looked at Elena.

“I won’t.”

Elena kissed Lily’s forehead.

“We are coming.”

Naomi lifted her.

Price moved toward the chapel exit.

Two of the former subjects helped him.

Victor remained beside Charles.

Marcus watched Daniel.

Ethan looked at him.

“Take them out.”

Marcus pointed toward Daniel.

“He will run.”

“He cannot outrun fire.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still underestimate me.”

Marcus looked toward Victor.

Their eyes met.

Father and son.

Neither moved.

Victor spoke first.

“Help me carry Charles.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You left me underground.”

“I know.”

“You watched them hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You told yourself you had no choice.”

Victor looked down.

“Yes.”

Marcus wanted hatred.

Victor offered no defense.

The timer reached two minutes and fifty seconds.

Charles coughed.

“We do not have time for confession.”

Marcus looked toward the old man.

Then he lifted the wheelchair.

Victor helped place Charles back into it.

Together, they pushed him toward the exit.

Daniel watched them.

“You will regret saving him.”

Marcus paused.

“I am not saving him.”

He looked at Victor.

“I am choosing what you never chose.”

Then he followed the others out.

Ethan and Elena entered the red chamber.

Heat already rose through the floor.

The central server stood behind a glass enclosure.

Two palm scanners glowed on opposite sides.

Elena placed her hand against one.

Ethan placed his against the other.

The system activated.

DESCENDANTS OF ISABEL SERRANO RECOGNIZED.

Elena closed her eyes.

Ethan could not look at the words.

A menu appeared.

PRESERVE ARCHIVE.

DESTROY ARCHIVE.

RELEASE ARCHIVE.

Elena looked at him.

“What do we choose?”

“Release it.”

“All of it?”

“All crimes.”

“All victims.”

“All names?”

Ethan hesitated.

Innocent children were connected to the files.

Survivors had built lives without knowing what had been done to them.

Public release could expose and endanger them.

“Separate the victims.”

Elena searched the menu.

“There is an option.”

PROTECT SUBJECT IDENTITIES.

RELEASE PERPETRATOR RECORDS.

Ethan selected it.

The timer showed one minute and forty seconds.

UPLOAD INITIATED.

The progress bar moved slowly.

Seven percent.

Elena looked toward the door.

“We won’t have time.”

“We stay until it finishes.”

“Lily needs one of us.”

“She needs both.”

The upload reached fifteen percent.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Ethan.”

“Not now.”

“We may not get another moment.”

“We will.”

“You don’t know that.”

The timer reached one minute.

The upload reached thirty-two percent.

Elena looked at him.

“I did love you.”

He stared at the screen.

“I know.”

“I never knew we shared a mother.”

“I know.”

“I would have told you.”

“I know.”

“I stayed beneath the house because Daniel threatened Lily.”

Ethan finally looked at her.

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You don’t.”

The upload reached forty percent.

“He said if I left, he would activate what he put inside her.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“So you let Victor keep her upstairs.”

“I thought he was protecting her.”

“He lied to her.”

“I heard her crying through the vents every night.”

Elena pressed one hand against her mouth.

“I could not reach her.”

Ethan pulled her into his arms.

For one second, they held each other as husband and wife.

Then the truth returned.

They stepped apart.

The upload reached fifty-seven percent.

The timer showed thirty seconds.

The glass enclosure began glowing orange.

Thermite burned beneath the floor.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

“We have to go.”

“Not yet.”

Seventy percent.

The door behind them slammed shut.

Daniel stood on the other side of the glass.

He smiled.

Ethan rushed toward the door.

Daniel held up the manual lock.

“You should have killed me.”

Elena looked toward the progress bar.

Eighty-two percent.

Flames rose along the chamber walls.

Daniel pressed his face close to the glass.

“You wanted the truth released.”

He looked at Ethan.

“Now die with it.”

The timer reached ten seconds.

The upload reached ninety-one percent.

Ethan struck the door.

Elena searched the walls.

No second exit appeared.

Five seconds.

Ninety-six percent.

Daniel stepped backward.

The archive completed its upload.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the server.

Inside lay a small silver drive.

Elena grabbed it.

The thermite charges ignited.

White fire exploded through the room.

Then the floor disappeared beneath them.
