Chapter 11 - The Chapel of Children

Ethan struck the chapel door with his shoulder.
It did not move.
He stepped back and hit it again.
The old wood shook.
Naomi pushed beside him.
Price covered the staircase behind them.
From the other side came Elena’s voice.
“Do not bring Lily inside!”
Ethan struck the door a third time.
The frame cracked.
Naomi kicked near the lock.
The wood split.
Together, they forced the door open.
The chapel was larger than Ethan remembered.
White pews stretched toward a black stone altar.
Painted angels watched from the ceiling.
Rows of candles burned along both walls.
But the room had changed.
Medical cables ran between the pews.
Steel restraints had been attached to the altar rail.
A circular machine stood where the baptismal font once belonged.
Lily sat inside it.
A metal band surrounded her head.
Thin wires disappeared beneath her hair.
Her eyes were closed.
Daniel stood beside the machine.
Six armed men formed a line behind him.
Elena knelt near the altar.
Marcus held her by one arm.
Charles sat in his wheelchair beneath a stained-glass window.
His hands were tied.
Victor lay on the floor beside him.
Ethan stopped.
Victor’s chest moved.
The bullet had not entered his skull.
Blood ran from a wound near his ear.
He was alive.
Marcus followed Ethan’s gaze.
“Blanks.”
Victor groaned.
Marcus smiled.
“I needed Charles to believe his son was dead.”
Charles looked toward Victor.
For the first time, genuine relief appeared on his face.
Victor opened his eyes.
“You missed.”
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
“I never miss.”
Ethan looked toward Lily.
“Take the machine off her.”
Daniel rested one hand on the control panel.
“She is almost ready.”
Elena struggled against Marcus.
“She will die.”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“She will survive.”
“You said that about the others.”
His expression hardened.
“They were weak.”
“They were children.”
“They became powerful.”
“They became broken.”
Lily’s fingers moved against the armrests.
Ethan stepped forward.
The armed men raised their weapons.
Daniel lifted one hand.
They held their fire.
Ethan looked at Elena.
She looked older than three lost years.
Her face was thin.
Bruises darkened both wrists.
But he still saw the woman who had once laughed beside him on a rain-soaked sidewalk.
The woman who sang to Lily while cooking.
The woman who disappeared after kissing him beneath the chandelier.
“Elena.”
Her eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.”
He had too many questions.
Too much pain.
But Lily remained inside the machine.
“Can you stop it?”
Elena nodded toward the altar.
“There is a manual circuit beneath the stone.”
Marcus tightened his grip on her.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“She is lying.”
“She has been trying to stop you for three years.”
“She has been trying to protect her own guilt.”
Ethan looked toward him.
“What guilt?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Elena brought Lily into the program.”
“No.”
Elena shook her head.
“That is not what happened.”
Daniel continued.
“She allowed Vale to begin conditioning.”
“To hide the memories you put inside her.”
“She signed the authorization.”
Marcus looked at Elena.
“You told me Victor forged it.”
“He did.”
Victor laughed weakly from the floor.
“You blame me for everything because it is convenient.”
Elena stared at him.
“You locked me beneath the house.”
“To keep Daniel from finding you.”
“You drugged me.”
“To stop you from walking into this chapel.”
“You told Lily her father abandoned her.”
Victor looked toward Ethan.
“That was Charles.”
Charles closed his eyes.
Ethan felt rage rise again.
“You told her I stopped looking.”
Charles did not answer.
Lily whispered from inside the machine.
“Daddy.”
Ethan moved.
The armed men lifted their rifles.
Daniel smiled.
“She can hear us.”
Ethan stopped.
“Lily, keep listening to my voice.”
Her eyes remained closed.
“I’m tired.”
“I know.”
“Mommy is crying.”
“I know.”
“Grandpa says I have to open the door.”
Daniel touched the controls.
“Tell him which door.”
Lily’s lips trembled.
“The red one.”
Ethan looked around the chapel.
No red door was visible.
Elena stared at Daniel.
“You found it.”
Daniel smiled.
“She remembered.”
Charles’s face changed.
“What red door?”
Marcus looked toward him.
“You truly did not know.”
Daniel approached the altar.
He pressed two fingers against a carved angel.
A section of black stone slid aside.
Behind it was a small red metal door.
The same thorned crown marked its center.
Ethan looked at Charles.
“You built this place.”
Charles stared at the door.
“Not that.”
Daniel laughed.
“Margaret built it.”
Ethan held up the Subject Seven file.
“Her name was Isabel.”
Daniel’s eyes moved toward the folder.
“So Vale told you.”
“He told me she was Elena’s mother.”
Silence spread through the chapel.
Elena looked at Ethan.
The shame and grief in her face confirmed everything.
He could not look away.
“You knew.”
Her voice broke.
“Not when we met.”
“When?”
“The night I disappeared.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
“You left a note.”
“Victor wrote it.”
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
Elena continued.
“I came here to find proof.”
“Of what?”
“That Charles falsified my mother’s death.”
Ethan looked toward his father.
Charles appeared smaller beneath the stained glass.
“I loved her.”
Daniel laughed.
“You studied her.”
“I married her.”
“You imprisoned her with silk and diamonds.”
Charles’s eyes hardened.
“She chose me.”
“She was seventeen.”
Ethan felt sick.
His father looked away.
Daniel stepped toward the red door.
“Isabel built the last archive after she understood what Charles intended.”
“What is inside?” Ethan asked.
Daniel smiled.
“The names no one else knows.”
“You already carry the names.”
“Not these.”
Charles pulled against the ropes.
“Do not open it.”
Marcus turned toward him.
“You spent six years searching for it.”
“I searched so I could destroy it.”
“No.”
Victor pushed himself onto one elbow.
“You searched because Margaret locked you out.”
Charles said nothing.
Ethan looked at the red door.
“What happens when it opens?”
Elena answered.
“The Crown loses its protection.”
“What protection?”
“People believe Charles created the system.”
“He did.”
“No.”
Elena looked toward the painted ceiling.
“He was only its caretaker.”
Daniel nodded.
“The real founders are named behind that door.”
“Then expose them.”
Elena’s face tightened.
“They are not only criminals.”
“What does that mean?”
“Some are governments.”
“Some are intelligence services.”
“Some are medical foundations.”
“Some are charities.”
Marcus pulled her closer.
“The truth will collapse institutions people depend on.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
“And you put the key inside her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward Charles.
“He did.”
Charles stared at him.
“That is a lie.”
Lily began reciting numbers.
The circular machine hummed.
Lights moved across the metal band around her head.
Elena screamed.
“Turn it off!”
Daniel pressed another control.
Lily’s voice grew louder.
She recited dates.
Coordinates.
Names.
Then she spoke a phrase Ethan recognized.
“The Crown does not bury its blood.”
The red door unlocked.
Charles’s face emptied.
Daniel smiled.
“Your successor authorization was the final voice pattern.”
Ethan understood.
When he repeated the phrase inside the north-wing chamber, the system recorded him.
Lily had carried the remaining sequence.
Together, father and daughter had opened the door.
Daniel had used him.
Again.
The red door swung inward.
Darkness waited beyond it.
A projector activated inside the hidden chamber.
An image appeared against the chapel wall.
Ethan’s mother sat in front of a camera.
She looked older than the girl in the file.
Younger than the woman Ethan remembered.
Her dark hair had been cut short.
A bruise marked her cheek.
She looked directly into the lens.
“My name is Isabel Serrano.”
Ethan could not move.
“I was taken into the Whitmore program when I was twelve years old.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
His sister’s voice filled the chapel.
“I survived because I learned to pretend obedience.”
Charles stared at the projection.
Tears appeared in his eyes.
“I married Charles Whitmore because it gave me access to the records.”
Ethan looked toward his father.
Charles’s lips formed her name.
The recording continued.
“I gave birth to two sons while living inside the estate.”
“Victor.”
“Ethan.”
“My first daughter, Elena, was taken from me before Charles found me.”
Elena began crying.
Marcus loosened his grip slightly.
Isabel’s recorded voice remained calm.
“Charles discovered Elena’s existence years later.”
“He ordered her monitored.”
“He intended to use her children to continue the program.”
Ethan looked at Lily.
His knees weakened.
Charles shouted toward the screen.
“No!”
The recording did not stop.
“I built the final archive to ensure the Crown could never erase what it had done.”
“I hid the opening sequence inside my bloodline.”
Daniel looked toward Lily with pride.
Ethan hated him for it.
Isabel continued.
“But the archive must not be opened by force.”
“If it is, every conditioned subject connected to the system will receive the original command.”
Naomi looked toward Daniel’s armed men.
“What command?”
The recording answered.
“Destroy the Crown.”
The six men behind Daniel became rigid.
Their eyes emptied.
Across the chapel, hidden speakers activated.
The same phrase repeated in several languages.
Destroy the Crown.
Price raised his weapon.
“Everyone down!”
The men lifted their rifles.
But they did not aim at Ethan.
They aimed at Charles.
Daniel shouted.
“Stop!”
They ignored him.
One fired.
Marcus dragged Elena behind a pew.
Ethan ran toward Lily.
Gunfire tore through the chapel.
Stained glass shattered.
Charles’s wheelchair overturned.
Victor crawled toward him.
Naomi fired at one of Daniel’s men.
Price tackled another.
Daniel rushed to the machine.
He began entering commands.
Nothing changed.
The system no longer recognized him.
Ethan reached Lily.
The metal band would not release.
She opened her eyes.
They were filled with terror.
“Daddy.”
“I’m here.”
“The door is angry.”
“I know.”
“Make it stop.”
Ethan pulled at the band.
Elena crawled toward the altar.
Marcus followed her.
A bullet struck the stone beside them.
Daniel shouted over the gunfire.
“You cannot remove her yet!”
Ethan looked at him.
“What happens?”
“The signal needs a carrier.”
“She is not your carrier.”
“If you disconnect her now, the command transfers fully into her nervous system.”
“What does that mean?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“She will attack every person linked to the Crown.”
Ethan looked toward his daughter.
Lily’s eyes had begun changing again.
She turned toward Charles.
Hatred appeared in her small face.
May you like
She whispered the command.
“Destroy the Crown.”
