Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Door

Darkness swallowed the staircase.

Ethan pressed his shoulder against the steel door.

“Elena!”

No answer came.

Behind him, Marcus activated the flashlight on his phone.

The narrow beam cut through the black corridor.

The door remained closed.

A thin red light now blinked above the lock.

Marcus grabbed the handle.

“Electronic mechanism.”

Ethan struck the door with the heel of his palm.

“Open it!”

The calm male voice did not return.

Ethan listened.

He heard movement beyond the steel.

A scrape.

A muffled breath.

Then something heavy being dragged across the floor.

Marcus searched along the wall.

“There has to be a manual release.”

Ethan stepped back.

“Break it.”

“With what?”

Ethan looked at the concrete stairs.

A metal handrail ran along one wall.

He seized it with both hands and pulled.

It did not move.

Marcus joined him.

Together, they wrenched the railing until the screws tore from the concrete.

The noise echoed through the underground passage.

Ethan carried the metal bar to the door.

He drove one end between the frame and the lock.

Marcus added his weight.

The steel groaned.

From the foyer above, voices shouted.

The sheriff had entered the estate.

Victor began yelling.

Ethan could not understand the words.

He did not care.

He forced the bar deeper.

The lock cracked.

A gunshot exploded from behind the door.

The bullet punched through the steel inches from Ethan’s head.

Marcus dragged him aside.

“Down!”

A second shot struck the concrete wall.

Fragments of stone cut across Ethan’s cheek.

Marcus switched off the flashlight.

Darkness returned.

Footsteps pounded down the staircase behind them.

“Sheriff’s department!”

Ethan pressed himself against the wall.

“Armed suspect behind the door!”

Deputies reached the bottom.

Flashlights swept across the corridor.

Sheriff Daniel Price moved to the front.

Ethan knew him.

They had met during one of the custody hearings.

Price had treated Ethan like a grieving husband who could not accept abandonment.

Now his expression held no doubt.

He saw the bullet holes.

He saw the broken railing.

He saw the hidden steel door.

Price raised his weapon.

“Who is inside?”

“My wife.”

The sheriff looked at him.

“And someone with a gun.”

Price motioned two deputies forward.

One carried a ballistic shield.

Another positioned a battering ram.

The man behind the shield approached the door.

“Sheriff’s department!”

His voice filled the underground corridor.

“Drop your weapon and open the door!”

Silence.

Price glanced at Ethan.

“Get upstairs.”

“I’m not leaving.”

“This is now an armed operation.”

“My wife is in there.”

“And you will not help her by getting shot.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Sheriff, my daughter says Elena is alive.”

Price studied his face.

Then he turned toward the deputy with the ram.

“Hit it.”

The first blow shook the frame.

The second bent the lock.

The third tore the door inward.

The deputies flooded the room.

“Clear left!”

“Clear right!”

“Hallway!”

Ethan moved before anyone could stop him.

He slipped through the shattered doorway behind them.

The first room resembled a medical laboratory.

White cabinets covered the walls.

An examination table stood beneath a surgical lamp.

Glass bottles lined metal shelves.

Several were empty.

Others contained clear liquid.

Leather restraints hung from the sides of the table.

Ethan stopped breathing.

A dark stain marked the mattress.

On the floor lay a syringe.

Still wet.

Sheriff Price caught Ethan by the shoulder.

“I told you to stay back.”

Ethan pointed toward an open doorway at the end of the room.

A thin trail of blood crossed the tiles.

Price released him.

The deputies followed the trail.

The next room contained a bed, a sink, and a toilet.

No windows.

No decoration.

No natural light.

A woman’s cardigan lay folded at the foot of the bed.

Ethan recognized it.

Dark blue wool.

One sleeve had a tiny repaired tear near the cuff.

Elena had worn it on the evening she disappeared.

He picked it up.

It still carried the faintest trace of her perfume.

Underneath it was a photograph.

Ethan and Elena stood on a beach with Lily between them.

Lily was four years old.

She sat on Ethan’s shoulders, laughing as Elena reached up to hold her hand.

Someone had torn Ethan’s face from the photograph.

Price looked toward the blood trail.

It continued into another corridor.

The underground level extended far beyond the foyer.

“This was built deliberately,” Marcus said.

Price glanced around.

“This is not a basement.”

“No,” Ethan replied.

“It is a prison.”

A deputy called from the corridor.

“We have another room!”

They hurried forward.

The blood led to a second steel door.

It was open.

Beyond it lay a storage chamber filled with wooden crates.

Several crates had been marked with medical symbols.

Others carried labels from a pharmaceutical research company.

Whitmore Biomedical.

Victor’s company.

Ethan had once invested in it.

Before his marriage collapsed.

Before his brother convinced the board that Ethan had become emotionally unstable.

Before Victor pushed him out.

Price opened one crate.

Inside were sealed boxes of medication.

No labels.

No patient instructions.

Only numerical codes.

Marcus photographed everything.

Ethan followed the blood.

It ended near the far wall.

A metal cabinet had been pushed aside.

Behind it was a narrow tunnel.

Fresh scratches marked the floor.

Someone had dragged a body through the opening.

Ethan entered without waiting.

The tunnel was unfinished.

Bare rock pressed close on both sides.

Exposed wiring ran overhead.

After twenty yards, the passage divided.

One branch continued straight.

The other turned sharply downward.

A faint draft came from the left.

Price ordered two deputies down each path.

Ethan followed the left passage.

They reached a circular room.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

A ladder rose through a shaft.

The hatch above stood open.

Price shone his light upward.

“Where does this lead?”

A deputy climbed.

After several seconds, his voice echoed down.

“Outside.”

“Where?”

“Near the east greenhouse.”

Price spoke into his radio.

“Lock down the grounds.”

A second deputy approached Ethan.

“We found clothing.”

He held up a piece of torn fabric.

Gray cotton.

Blood stained one edge.

Ethan did not recognize it.

Then he noticed a small embroidered letter near the collar.

An E.

Elena used to stitch her initials into clothing she wore for work.

It was an old habit from medical school.

She had been a clinical researcher before Lily was born.

She believed everything needed a label.

Everything needed proof of ownership.

Ethan touched the cloth.

“It’s hers.”

The sheriff’s radio crackled.

A deputy outside shouted over the transmission.

“Movement by the greenhouse!”

Price turned toward the ladder.

“Male suspect heading into the woods.”

Another voice followed.

“Possible hostage.”

Ethan looked up.

“What does that mean?”

The radio crackled again.

“We saw a man carrying someone.”

Ethan climbed.

Price shouted after him.

“Cole!”

Ethan ignored him.

He emerged inside the ruins of the east greenhouse.

Half the glass roof had collapsed years ago.

Dead vines hung from rusted frames.

Rain drifted through the broken panels.

A side door stood open.

Mud covered the stone path outside.

Two sets of footprints led toward the trees.

One set belonged to a man.

The other was not a set of footprints at all.

It was a long dragging mark.

Ethan ran.

Branches struck his face.

Mud pulled at his shoes.

Behind him, deputies spread through the woods.

The estate covered more than four hundred acres.

Ethan and Victor had spent their childhood exploring the trails.

Ethan knew every ridge.

Every stream.

Every abandoned cottage.

Victor knew them too.

The dragging marks turned toward the old hunting road.

Ethan followed.

He heard an engine start somewhere ahead.

He ran faster.

A black utility vehicle burst from behind the trees.

Ethan jumped aside.

The front tire missed him by inches.

The driver wore a dark coat and silver-framed glasses.

For one second, their eyes met through the windshield.

The doctor.

A pale woman lay motionless across the rear seat.

Elena.

Ethan slammed both hands against the side of the vehicle.

“Elena!”

Her head moved slightly.

Her eyes opened.

She saw him.

Her lips formed his name.

The utility vehicle accelerated.

Ethan grabbed the door handle.

It was locked.

His shoes slid through the mud as the vehicle dragged him alongside.

He struck the window.

The doctor turned the wheel sharply.

Ethan lost his grip.

He hit the ground and rolled into a ditch.

The vehicle raced down the hunting road.

Deputies fired no shots.

Elena was inside.

Ethan pushed himself up.

Pain tore through his shoulder.

Price reached him.

“Are you hurt?”

“Get after them!”

Three sheriff’s vehicles sped down the road.

Ethan climbed into the passenger seat of Price’s SUV.

The sheriff did not argue.

They followed the tire tracks toward the northern gate.

The black utility vehicle had a lead of almost a minute.

Price radioed ahead.

“Block the north exit.”

A deputy responded.

“Gate is closed.”

Ethan gripped the dashboard.

The road curved downhill.

Through the rain, he saw the utility vehicle ahead.

It did not slow.

The northern gate remained shut.

A deputy’s cruiser blocked the road beyond it.

The doctor drove straight toward the iron barrier.

“He’s not stopping,” Price said.

The utility vehicle struck the gate.

Metal screamed.

One side of the gate broke free.

The vehicle forced itself through the gap.

The deputy’s cruiser moved to block it.

The doctor swerved.

The rear of the utility vehicle slammed into the cruiser.

Glass shattered.

The utility vehicle spun once.

Then it regained the road.

Price accelerated.

They were close enough now for Ethan to see Elena through the rear window.

She was awake.

Her hands were restrained.

She lifted her head.

The doctor reached backward and struck her.

Ethan’s vision went red.

“I’ll kill him.”

Price kept both hands on the wheel.

“You will not touch him when we stop.”

“He kept her underground for three years.”

“And I need him alive.”

The road descended toward the river.

The bridge ahead had been closed since winter.

A barricade stood across the entrance.

The doctor did not slow.

“He’s trapped,” Ethan said.

Price’s expression remained grim.

“No.”

The utility vehicle struck the barricade and broke through.

It raced onto the narrow bridge.

Halfway across, the doctor stopped.

Price braked twenty yards behind him.

Deputies arrived in the second vehicle.

Doors opened.

Weapons came up.

Rain poured across the bridge.

The doctor stepped out.

He held a pistol against Elena’s neck.

She could barely stand.

Her hair hung around her face.

Her skin looked almost translucent.

But she was alive.

Ethan opened his door.

Price grabbed him.

“Stay here.”

The doctor pulled Elena close.

“Come out, Ethan.”

His voice was calm.

The same voice from behind the steel door.

Ethan stepped from the SUV.

The sheriff moved beside him.

“Put down the weapon.”

The doctor smiled.

“You still believe this is a kidnapping.”

Price raised his pistol.

“It looks like one.”

The doctor’s silver glasses reflected the emergency lights.

“Elena came to us willingly.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You kept her in a cell.”

“She asked to be protected.”

“From whom?”

The doctor looked at Ethan.

“From him.”

The words struck harder than a blow.

Ethan took a step forward.

“Elena, tell them.”

Her eyes struggled to focus.

“Tell them what he did to you.”

She looked at Ethan.

Her lips moved.

No sound came.

The doctor pressed the gun harder against her throat.

“Tell him why you left.”

Elena’s knees buckled.

The doctor held her upright.

Ethan’s voice broke.

“Elena.”

She looked at him through the rain.

Then she whispered.

“I was trying to save Lily.”

“From Victor?”

Elena shook her head.

Ethan felt something inside him fracture.

“From who?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“From you.”

May you like

The doctor smiled.

Then the bridge exploded beneath them.
